City of Akron Accepting Applications for Firefighter Paramedics
Akron, Ohio, August 5, 2026 — The City of Akron is accepting applications for the position of Firefighter Paramedic through August 31, 2026. Starting pay is $31.53/hour during the fire academy and increases to $34.60 after successful completion. Akron offers an in-house fire academy that offers 16-week paid training. An employee in this class serves as a member of a fire/medical company responsible for acting at fires, medical, and other emergencies to protect and preserve life and property through the use of a wide variety of skilled manual, mechanical, and basic and advanced life support techniques.

Candidates must meet several baseline qualifications to be eligible, including:
• 17 - 40 years old by the application closing date (August 31, 2026)
• High school diploma or GED
• Valid driver’s license
• United States Citizen or have a valid permanent resident card
Candidates must pass, the National Testing Network test, a physical fitness test, a polygraph examination, and a background investigation. Final selection is contingent upon passing a medical and psychological evaluation after receiving a conditional job offer. The City of Akron also awards bonus points to those candidates who pass the written test and meet a residency requirement, have served in active duty in the armed forces of the United States for more than 180 days and were honorably discharged, and/or have completed accredited college course work, graduated from a high school within the corporate limits of the City of Akron and candidates certified EMT-B and/or EMT-P by the State of Ohio or out-of-state with National Registry.
Successful applicants will receive paid, on-the-job training while attending the Fire Academy, EMT school, and Paramedic school. Additional compensation for the position of Firefighter Paramedic includes a generous benefits package consisting of medical and prescription coverage, dental and vision insurance, life insurance at no cost, paid vacation time, sick leave, and paid holidays.
