According to the NFPA, roughly 20% of grill fires are caused by a failure to clean the equipment, while a significant portion of gas grill injuries happen right when the grill is being lit.
1. The Lid-Open Rule (Gas Grills)
Always open the lid before lighting your gas grill. If the lid is closed and propane builds up underneath, hitting the igniter can cause a sudden, violent fireball that can burn your face and arms. If the flame goes out while cooking, turn the grill and gas off, open the lid, and wait at least 5 minutes before trying again.
2. Check the "3-Foot and 10-Foot" Rules
* The 10-Foot Clearance: Keep your grill at least 10 feet away from your home, siding, deck railings, and out from under overhanging branches or vinyl eaves.
* The 3-Foot Safe Zone: Maintain a 3-foot perimeter around the hot grill to keep children and pets safe from accidental contact burns.
3. Tackle the Grease
A clean grill is a safe grill. Regularly scrape or brush down the grates and empty the grease tray underneath. Accumulated grease can easily ignite into a stubborn grease fire that can quickly overwhelm the grill's containment.
> For Charcoal Users: When you're done, let the coals cool completely for at least 48 hours before throwing them away, or douse them thoroughly in water and place them exclusively in a metal container with a tight lid. Never put them directly into a plastic trash bin or cardboard box.
