On hot days like today, I’m thinking about the brave men and women who are either paid or volunteer firefighters.
Albany needs to support them both more.
Last year, Albany appropriated $25 million in grants for volunteer departments. On the other hand, they gave $1.2 billion to film and musical tax credits. The Governor’s own staff commissioned a study and found these subsidies weren’t effective.
So why aren’t we cutting those tax credits and giving more money to fire departments, law enforcement agencies, veterans programs, and Meals on Wheels?
My view on government spending is simple: focus on the essentials. That means MORE investment in fire departments, law enforcement, and programs for veterans. Special interest film tax credits? Not so much. Those are the investments worth making that keep our communities strong.
