Remembering District Chief Franklin Dennis of the Bloomfield Park Fire Company, who lost his life in the line of duty on August 21, 1960.

The Camden County Hero Scholarship Fund remembers Chief Franklin Dennis, from the Pennsauken Fire Department, Bloomfield Park Fire Station, who made the ultimate sacrifice on this day, August 21, 1960.

Chief Dennis was participating in a large fire drill featuring 125 volunteers in the town of Merchantville when he collapsed and taken to Our Lady Of Lourdes Hospital by ambulance. He was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Chief Dennis was survived by his wife Doris, Son Richard, and Daughter Rena.

Tuesday 5/19: Engine Company 113 (first due engine), Tower Ladder 11, PFD BLS, and Deputy 11 were dispatched to the 200 block of Woodlawn Avenue in Merchantville for reported private dwelling fire. Engine Company 113 arrived to find fire showing from multiple windows on Division 1 with extending fire conditions, established the primary water supply and assisted by the members of Engine 129, placed two handlines in service, with Tower Ladder 11 conducting the primary search. Deputy 11 assumed command and transmitted the all hands signal, making special calls for additional companies due to weather and hoarding conditions within the dwelling.
