RIP Brother

With profound sadness, the New Jersey Fraternal Order of Police mourns the passing of Chaplain Jim McGuire.

Chaplain McGuire was a pillar of our organization and the law enforcement community. Elected Chaplain of the NJ State FOP Lodge in September 2020, he devoted more than five decades to the Fraternal Order of Police, having been a proud member since 1973. He honorably served the Jersey City Police Department for 33 years, retiring as a Lieutenant after a career marked by meritorious service.

His commitment to the FOP was unwavering—serving as Treasurer of Jersey City Lodge #4 for 14 years and holding numerous State FOP committee roles, including long-standing service on Ways & Means, Tactical North, and Tactical Central Committees. Beyond the FOP, Chaplain McGuire was a dedicated leader within the Honor Legion of the Police Departments of the State of New Jersey, including a decade as Chairman of the Awards Committee.

Chaplain McGuire’s legacy is one of faith, service, leadership, and compassion. He will be deeply missed, but his impact will never be forgotten.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all who had the honor of serving alongside him.

Rest in peace, Chaplain McGuire. Your watch is complete. 🕊️💙

29 years ago Brother George Bowman passed away after suffering a heart attack in the line of duty. Every FOP in this state knows the name but, the young members may not know the story.

On Thursday, July 20, 1995, Patrolman Bowman was involved in a motor vehicle pursuit that traveled through several different towns. The pursuit finally ended in Audubon and Patrolman Bowman was able to arrest one of the suspects. After securing the suspect in the rear of his marked police unit, Patrolman Bowman collapsed, suffering a heart attack. His fellow Officers performed CPR on Patrolman Bowman and he was transported to the hospital. Unfortunately Patrolman Bowman lapsed into a coma and never regained consciousness, passing on September 3, 1995.

Patrolman Bowman was a Vietnam Veteran. With the police department, he was a former K9 handler. At the time of his passing, Patrolman Bowman was the president of the Fraternal Order of Police, Garden State Lodge #3. He was very active union man who fought for and won several rights for his fellow union Brothers and Sisters. He also did so much work for police survivors in this state, that the New Jersey State Fraternal Order of Police named their survivors fund after him.

Patrolman Bowman is survived by his wife, Barbara, and their two children. Rest in Peace Brother, you are not forgotten.

We miss you brother. Rest easy.
