PRESS RELEASE: Montgomery County Prepares for Winter Storm

Some key safety tips to keep in mind:

❄️The heavy, wet snow expected with this storm may cause widespread power outages, the impact of which will be enhanced by a significant drop in temperatures later this week.

❄️If you lose power, do not call 9-1-1. The County’s Emergency Communications Center will already be extremely busy with storm-related incidents. Call your local utility provider to report the outage. PECO: 1-800-841-4141/PPL: 1-800-342-5775/Met-Ed: 1-888-544-4877

❄️Always assume that all power lines are live, even if you lose power in your home or business. Never go near or touch a fallen power line.

❄️Never use a gas stove to heat your home. If you use candles for light, exercise extreme caution and never place them near combustible materials such as curtains or furniture. Battery powered candles or flashlights are much safer, especially if you have children or pets.

❄️If your power is out, keep your refrigerator and freezer doors closed, which should keep food cold for about four hours. Be sure to dispose of any perishables (meat, poultry, fish, eggs, leftovers, etc.) that have been above 40° F for two hours or more.

❄️If you have a portable generator, never use it inside your home or even in a partially enclosed area. Generators, as well as gas and charcoal grills, produce Carbon Monoxide, which is an odorless, colorless gas that can kill you. Keep the generator far away from doors, windows, and air intakes.

❄️Never overload the generator or attempt to power your house by plugging it into a wall outlet. Both practices can cause electric shock or fire.

HELP WITH STORM DAMAGE: If you’re struggling to cleanup from Hurricane Isaias, volunteer groups want to hear from you. From now until Friday, Aug 28, residents can call the Hurricane Isaias Home Cleanup Hotline at 1-844-965-1386 (toll free) to provide details about the extent of storm-related damage.

Volunteers from disaster relief organizations will answer the call and share your information with other local community agencies and faith groups.

Things these groups can help with:
✔ Cutting fallen trees
✔ Removing affected drywall, flooring, and appliances
✔ Tarping roofs
✔ Mitigating mold

Things these groups can NOT help with:
❌ Food, clothing, or shelter
❌ Insurance information
❌ Questions about FEMA assistance
❌ Financial support

If you need help with concerns that are not related to cleaning up your home, you can connect with service providers in your area through the United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey's “2-1-1 SEPA” service by calling 2-1-1 or texting your ZIP Code to 898-211.

⚠ PLEASE NOTE: There is no guarantee that you will receive these services. They are performed by volunteers and provided at no cost to the resident. However, there are limited resources available and many homes that were affected. After providing your information to the Hotline, you may be contacted by a representative from a participating organization who will determine if they are able to provide help.

The Montgomery County Department of Public Safety is extremely thankful for the partnership with members of Southeastern PA Voluntary Organizations Active in Disasters and other associated agencies who continuously offer to support our residents.

ICYMI: This Flash Flood Watch has been EXTENDED overnight Friday (until 2am Saturday morning) as the storm chances continue into the evening hours. ⚠ PLEASE USE CAUTION WHILE DRIVING - especially at night.

FLASH FLOOD WATCH: Montgomery County is under a Flash Flood Watch until Friday morning. Our friends at US National Weather Service Philadelphia/Mount Holly say that a few rounds of storms may drop another one-half of an inch of rainfall - but it won't take much to create flooding conditions on ground that's already saturated.

If you live in a flood-prone area (or experienced flooding from Isaias on Tuesday) please be mindful of the weather conditions, especially at night. Flash flooding can happen quickly.

Limit travel if possible, and make sure your cell phones are fully charged.

TORNADO WATCH for Montgomery County until 4pm Tuesday / With land-falling tropical storms and hurricanes, brief tornadoes often form. Just because they're small doesn't mean we shouldn't take them seriously.

Here's the Monday morning update on Isaias: As the center of the storm moves northward, the biggest threat to Montgomery County is significant rainfall of 4-6 inches and the possibility of flooding. The secondary threat are gusty winds of 40-50 mph.

TODAY IS THE DAY to take your storm precautions!

▪ Secure or bring indoors any loose objects in the yard or on your decks/porches that could become flying or floating objects

▪ If you live anywhere near a waterway, be mindful of quickly rising waters

▪ If your home or property has flooded before, then take steps to minimize the impact by doing things like moving vehicles to higher ground and moving valuable items to the highest floors of your home

▪ Fully-charge all of your portable electronic devices!

MORE DANGEROUS SANITIZERS: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued *another* warning about a new batch of hand sanitizers (made in Mexico) that have been tested and confirmed to contain methanol - a dangerous toxic substance that can be absorbed directly into the skin and can cause serious (and sometimes fatal) health consequences.

Please refer to the links in the FDA post to find the complete list of affected products.

Anyone who’s been exposed to sanitizer containing methanol should seek immediate treatment by calling the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222 or by calling 9-1-1 in life-threatening situations.

If you have any of these sanitizers, stop using them immediately. DO NOT flush or pour them down the drain. They need to be treated like hazardous waste and will need to be disposed of in the same method.

You can find an updated list of Hazardous Waste Collection events across Montgomery County at www.montcopa.org/7…/Household-Hazardous-Waste-Collection-Pro

Today, FDA warned the public not to use hand sanitizer products containing methanol or wood alcohol, which can be toxic when absorbed through the skin and life-threatening when ingested: https://go.usa.gov/xwSmC

We’ve seen an increase in hand sanitizer products that have tested positive for methanol contamination. State officials also reported recent adverse events from adults and children ingesting hand sanitizer contaminated with methanol, including blindness, hospitalizations, and death.

FDA recommends consumers immediately stop using these hand sanitizers and dispose in a hazardous waste container or as recommended by local waste management center. Do not flush or pour these products down the drain or mix with other liquids.

We’re communicating with manufacturers & distributors of these dangerous products about recalling them. Here is a list of FDA-tested and recalled hand sanitizer products: https://go.usa.gov/xwSmg

ICYMI: Hand Sanitizer Alert!

Today, FDA advised consumers not to use any hand sanitizer manufactured by Eskbiochem due to the potential presence of methanol, which can be toxic when absorbed through the skin or ingested. Consumers who have been exposed to hand sanitizer containing methanol should seek immediate treatment for potential reversal of toxic effects of methanol poisoning. FDA recommends consumers dispose of these hand sanitizers immediately in appropriate hazardous waste containers. To learn more, visit: https://go.usa.gov/xwp3c
