“It is with a heavy heart that I deliver the news that no fire chief ever wants to deliver. Yesterday we lost one of our own, Hickory Firefighter Jake Bridges, while on duty,” states Hickory Fire Chief Matt Hutchinson.

Hutchinson continues, “We are working with our state partner agencies to gain a better understanding of this tragedy.”

Although the family and department await further details surrounding Jake’s passing, below is the information known at this time.

At approximately 1:49 a.m. Thursday, June 5, Hickory firefighters were dispatched to a structure fire. The fire was extinguished, and firefighters cleared the scene at approximately 4:52 a.m.

After returning to their station, firefighters worked to get the truck back in service. At approximately 5:08 a.m., Firefighter Jake Bridges experienced a medical emergency and was transported to a local hospital. Despite the best efforts of his fellow firefighters, first responders, and medical personnel, sadly, Jake passed away.

At just 20 years old, Jake demonstrated his passion for the firefighting profession and dedication to the community. After completing the Gaston College Fire Academy in 2022, he joined the Hickory Fire Department in June 2023 as a certified Level II Firefighter and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).

Hickory Fire Department grieves this tragic loss and mourns with Jake’s family, friends, and the community. The department thanks the community and all partner agencies and neighboring departments for their support during this difficult time.

Today we learned of the passing of one of our Brothers, Jay Lyons, of the Red Oak Community Rural Fire Department. Jay was one of several Red Oak firefighters who responded across the state to provide Little River Fire Department with assistance during Hurricane Helene. The friendships made while working alongside these men have continued well past the Hurricane. Jay was an outstanding example of a firefighter dedicated to his job. This was evident by his constant training, motivating attitude, and positive outlook. You will be missed Brother!

Transylvania County Fire Marshal's Office has put in place effective immediately a burn ban for any open burning within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling in the interest of public safety due to the hazardous forest fire conditions. What this does not apply to is cooking fires such as grills, BBQ's, and outdoor cookers. This local ban will remain in effect until further notice. The press release from the Transylvania County Fire Marshal's Office is attached.

Due to increased fire risk, the N.C. Forest Service has issued a ban on all open burning and has canceled all burning permits statewide effective 8 a.m. Friday, March 21 until further notice.

Under North Carolina law, the ban prohibits all open burning in the affected counties, regardless of whether a permit was previously issued. The issuance of any new permits has also been suspended until the ban is lifted. Anyone violating the burn ban faces a $100 fine plus $183 court costs. Any person responsible for setting a fire may be liable for any expenses related to extinguishing the fire.

The burn ban does not apply to fires started within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling. The local fire marshal has authority to issue a burn ban within that 100 feet.

Extremely Dangerous Weather!!!

We can not stress this enough if you are in an area prone to flooding the time to move out is now. NOAA is prediticting the second highest crest ever recorded of the French Broad River.

Conditions will deteriorate rapidly overnight as many places are already flooding.

If you do not have to be out please plan to stay in and have enough food and water to be self sufficient for an extended period of time.

With the expected river crest many areas of Transylvania County may be cut off from other parts of the county.

We are forecasted to receive 10-12 more inches of rain with locally higher amounts. This much rain combined with heavy winds will make travel difficult and lead to extensive life threatening dangers within Transylvania County.
