Florence Fire Protection District Station 2 Penrose Dedicated to protecting life and property in the Florence Fire Protection District.

Great news! As of 10:00am 8/18/26, the Florence Fire Protection District has moved from a stage two to a stage one fire ban! This is due to the recent favorable weather conditions the district has received.

This, however, does NOT mean the dangerous fire conditions are gone. There are still numerous fires burning throughout the western United States and resources to fight these fires are limited. The district is still in a drought with water restrictions in place, therefore, we urge residents to follow the burning regulations to help reduce the risk of fires. These restrictions are the same as Bureau of Land Management and Fremont County.

UPDATE 0815 7/26: the fire is at 100% containment. Crews will be out today ensuring there are no hot spots. There was no damage to any structures.

The FFPD and DFPC are on scene of a fire north of Penrose, west of Hwy 115. No structures are threatened at this time. Approximately six acres. The highway is still open at this time.

Community Update

We have received several questions regarding evacuation orders within the Florence Fire Protection District.

At this time, no evacuation orders have been issued within the Florence Fire Protection District service area in Fremont County.

Pre-evacuation notices remain in effect for the southern portion of our district, including:

* Fremont County Roads 15, 103, and 100
* Newlin Ridge Road
* Los Pinos Subdivision
* Lock Mountain Estates
* The towns of Coal Creek and Rockvale

The previously announced pre-evacuation area along Highway 67, extending approximately 4.5 miles north from the Custer County line, 2 miles east, and 2.5 miles west, also remains in effect.

The City of Florence is not under any evacuation order.

Pre-evacuation notices are issued to give residents advance warning of potential danger and time to prepare should conditions require an evacuation. We have established trigger points that will provide residents with adequate time to leave safely if an evacuation becomes necessary.

We understand there has been confusing and, at times, inaccurate information circulating through various media outlets. Please know that we are working diligently alongside our partner agencies to protect our community and will continue to provide timely, accurate updates through our official channels.

From District Fire Chief Bill Ritter:

The Florence Fire Protection District will be entering into Stage 2 Fire Restrictions at 10:00 on 6/29/2026. This is due to the extremely dry and windy conditions we have been experiencing.

We understand that our residents will want to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday with fireworks. We are asking all residents of the Florence Fire Protection District to be aware of these dry conditions this weekend when lighting fireworks. Please do not use any fireworks that leave the ground and only light fireworks in a safe area free of vegetation. We ask that you have a garden hose with the water on and ready to extinguish any fires started by the fireworks near you at all times while celebrating with fireworks. Please soak all used fireworks in a tub or bucket of water for at least twenty minutes when completed.

The KO fire burning near Hwy 115 and F45 is at approximately 64 acres. See the map below that shows the affected area. There are no reported injuries. The fire is at 0% containment.

Taking a few minutes to register your burn helps keep our community safe and ensures emergency services are aware of planned fire activity.

We are still in Stage 1 Fire Restrictions, however the new online burn permit system will be live in the coming days and we wanted to get this information out to you now.
If you have a current burn permit, you will need to apply for one in the new system.

Tonight at 6:00 PM, a public town hall meeting will be held at Penrose Elementary School regarding the 24 Fire.

This is an opportunity for community members to receive updates. Officials will be present to provide information and answers.
