Whether traveling across town or across the state, it’s important to prepare your vehicle and practice safe driving. The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles created a road trip checklist to help drivers ensure we all remain safe this holiday season.

Two weeks before your trip you should:
🔴 Perform any regularly scheduled maintenance, including an oil change, and ensure your brakes are in good working order.
🔴 Replace or repair cloudy headlights and worn wipers. Check that brake lights and turn signals are working properly.
🔴 Inspect tires for damage and adequate tread depth and replace if necessary. Even if tires are in good shape, schedule an appointment to have them balanced, rotated and aligned. Don’t forget to check the condition of the spare tire.

Celebrate responsibly this holiday season!
• Designate a sober driver or plan to use a ride-share service before the fun begins.
• Buckle Up. A seatbelt is your vehicle’s most important safety feature, but it only works if you use it.
• Contact local law enforcement if you happen to see an impaired driver on the road. Don’t hesitate to dial *FHP (*347). This call could save a life.
• Remember, possession of an open alcoholic beverage container in a vehicle (in motion or stopped) by the driver and or passenger(s) is a violation of Florida law.

The Florida Department of Transportation and the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles are committed to protecting you on the state’s roadways and providing the information you need to travel safely.

Follow these tips and Alive this Thanksgiving:
🔸 Never drive impaired. Celebrate responsibly and do not get behind the wheel if you have been drinking or using substances that cause impairment. Plan ahead and find a safe way home every time – designate a driver or use a ride service.
🔸 Check your tires. Tires are a vehicle’s first line of defense on the road. Check your tire pressure, tread depth and spare tire, especially before long trips. Do not overload your vehicle, it can result in premature wear and tire blowouts.
🔸 Buckle up. A seat belt is your vehicle’s most important safety feature. Florida law requires that all drivers, all front seat passengers, and all passengers under the age of 18 wear seat belts or the appropriate child restraints. Seat belts save lives, so buckle up every trip, every time.
🔸 Observe and obey all speed limits. Speed limits may change as you drive through different types of roadways, so make sure you adjust your speed accordingly. In Florida, the limit will never exceed 70 mph.

Regardless of how well tires have been maintained or how little they’ve been driven, the age of the tire is crucial to safety. It is inadvisable to operate a vehicle with tires that are more than six years old.

Tires are your vehicle’s first line of defense on the road. With proper care and maintenance, they will keep you safely motoring along Florida’s highways and help you and your loved ones .
