I am standing on Davis Hwy looking down at what was a creek. Now damned up and over grown with popcorn trees and other invasive species. Just 5 years ago the creek was still flowing.

FIRE STATION #3. The fire station located at 2750 Summit was one of the oldest fire stations in the city. In 2004 it suffered substantial damage due to Hurricane Ivan, but regardless the men and women who were trained first responders kept working, kept putting out fires, kept answering emergency calls, kept helping citizens like me when my mom needed assistance getting back in the bed. They kept doing what they always do - looking out for the needs of the residents. But, their government was not looking out for them. Fire Station #3 could have been rebuilt with LOST funds, Series 3. But it took getting LOST 4 series and borrowing the funds against LOST 4 to get the station rebuilt. In 2011, when I first took office there was only $65,275.00 left in LOST 3. The council hired a consultant to evaluate the building. The report only examined what was visible. The contract made it clear they were not going behind the wall. So, the problem persisted. The fire fighters kept working and the union president kept complaining. I went there in 2015 to see for myself and what I found was shocking - black mold and water stains through out the building. I decided enough was enough. I drafted an emergency ordinance that required the city to immediately take action to remove people from the building and to rebuild Fire Station #3. At the January 14, 2016 agenda conference two councilmen tried to get the item removed, but I fought back insisting the item go forward to the regular council meeting. At that meeting I pulled the item but don’t know why and the video of that meeting is missing. However, in March of 2017, the council held a workshop for LOST allocating $3 million to rebuild Fire Station #3, per my request.
The larger issue is related to the political campaign going on right now over LOST ( local option sales tax) that requires a sales transaction.The state of Florida has a 6% tax, but allows local governments to add an additional tax if voters approve it. You no doubt have seen a lot of signs posted in front of banks and realtors offices. Even the government is showing you pictures of projects that were built with LOST. What they are not showing you is the truth. Fire Station #3 could have been rebuilt years earlier with Series 3 funds, but those in charge had other priorities. Before you vote to tax yourself for the benefit of banks and realtors do you due diligence. Ask yourself if you trust the government.

Asbury Place at Cokesbury Church is for sale. Why this matters for District 2. D2 does not have a community center. For 12 years, while serving on city council, Cokesbury generously opened its doors to me and allowed me to use the facility free for town hall meetings. I held many town hall meetings there, including numerous ones specifically about Carpenter Creek. Other public officials also used the facility. D 2 almost had a community center at Tippin Park. When I left city council in 2022 there was a million dollar line item for the Tippin Park Resource Center, RFQ was sent out, an architectural firm was hired, a community input date was sit, then cancelled. Then on January 19th 2023, the day I received council emeritus honor and left the chambers, I didn’t know that removing $900,000.00 from the Tippin Park Resource Center was on the agenda because it was hidden in a budget resolution. A friend who was at the council meeting texted me later and told me what had happened and that Charles Bare voted to take money out of the funds allocated for a community center. He voted to take $900,000.00 away from that project. The video is on record in the city archives. He didn’t call, text, or communicate with me or people in the Tippin Park Community - he definitely didn’t put up a fight. I think the city should try and purchase Asbury Place for a senior citizen events and other activities.

Early voting is underway. If you are a registered NPA (No Party Affiliated) you can vote in the city mayoral race. NPAs make up 19% of Escambia County voters. That number is not one that should be ignored. Please find a polling place and go vote. Also, share this post so other people who are registered NPA will know they can make a difference.

🗳️ EARLY VOTING UPDATE: Escambia County
Two days in, and the numbers tell an interesting story. 2,476 voters hit the polls early—up from 2,143 four years ago. But vote-by-mail ballots are lagging: 10,374 so far vs. 12,452 in 2022's comparable primary.

Overall turnout is down 1,345 votes compared to the same point in 2022.

The breakdown by party? Republicans lead with 49.21% of all votes cast, and they make up nearly two-thirds of early voters. Democrats sit at 37.74%, with NPA voters at 11.32%.

Early voting runs through Saturday, Aug. 15, at 10 locations across the county, 8 a.m.–5:30 p.m. daily. Any registered Escambia voter can cast a ballot at any location.

Highly disturbing, scary and unacceptable. As your council member I will sponsor an ordinance that requires council oversight of Police Department use of Flock surveillance cameras and other license plate readers.

Flock’s array of license-plate cameras was built to fight crime. But at least 50 law enforcement officers were charged with or accused of misusing it and other systems.
