You've been shot down or are separated from your unit, you have little to no for or resources, and you may or may not be surrounded by enemy forces. Basically you've have found yourself in an otherwise impossible set of circumstances and if you hope to make it home safely you will have to dig deep. It takes more than brawn and bravado to not only survive but thrive in those impossible circumstances.

Survive Evade Resist and Escape (SERE) training is some of the toughest around and it is directly based on the first hand experiences of those who have actually endured real-life scenarios like it.

For Lt. Jacob Westerberg, Naval Research Psychologist assigned to the Robert E. Mitchell Center's Repatriated Prisoner of War Studies Program, understanding the mental challenges of survival first hand was critical to his work in not only helping our RPOWs but also helping our forces prepare for the next fight.

Check out a few of his insights from his time in SERE training and ask yourself: "Do you think survival is only physical?"

Survival isn't for the faint of heart. It requires dedication and focus. When you enlist in America’s Navy, you can count yourself among the highest-achieving professionals in their fields. Preparing for the worst case scenarios in aviation is something that requires that level of professionalism and determination. Even though training is a valuable team-building experience, one's ability to survive depends on one's training and ability to endure both mentally and physically. At NSTI we train and support our Sailors and Marines by bringing as much of the actual stresses and factors that affect their ability to come home safely and deliver them in a controlled environment. Though nonetheless challenging or physically demanding.
