🐟 Have you ever wondered what an artificial reef deployment looks like? Check out the video below highlighting the deployment of two artificial reefs last summer, located approximately five miles southeast of Pensacola Pass (30°17.910'N; 087°13.785'W) at a depth of 40 feet.

🪸 Our Marine Resources Division has been closely monitoring the reefs since their deployment, noting extensive growth of marine life on the surface of the reef modules and numerous fishes including red and gray snapper, grey triggerfish, jacks, and more.

🤝 These reefs were designed by Escambia County Marine Resources in collaboration with Florida Sea Grant and students at Booker T. Washington High School and West Florida High School. Funding for these reefs was made possible by Coastal Conservation Association. The reef modules were designed, constructed and deployed by Walter Marine, LLC, under the direction of the Escambia County Marine Resources Division in May 2025.

The project will support economic development not just in the City of Pensacola, but throughout Escambia County and the entire Northwest Florida Region, creating approximately 2,000 manufacturing and related jobs connected to advanced shipbuilding and maritime manufacturing operation.

District 1 Commissioner Steve Stroberger, District 2 Commissioner Mike Kohler, and District 3 Commissioner Lumon May were in attendance for the announcement, along with numerous local elected officials and leaders.
