My Pensacola Bay Bridge

My Pensacola Bay Bridge News of the Pensacola Bay Bridge replacement project, underway in Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties Construction is estmated for completion in late 2022.

This is the official page for the Florida Department of Transportation's (FDOT) Pensacola Bay Bridge replacement project. Construction began in Spring 2017 on what is the largest transportation infrastructure program in Northwest Florida history. The previous, four-lane structure was constructed in 1960 and found to be structurally deficient in 2012. FDOT life cycle cost analyses indicate

d replacing the bridge was a better alternative than widening or rehabilitating it due to the cost of maintaining the aging structure. The first (eventual eastbound, Pensacola to Gulf Breeze) bridge opened to traffic in summer 2019. This allowed for the demolition of the 1960 bridge and the current construction of the new westbound (Gulf Breeze to Pensacola) bridge. Also included in the project is construction of a new interchange at 17th Avenue in Pensacola. The new interchange opened in fall 2021. The $430-million project will increase safety and improve traffic flow for the estimated 58,000 drivers who currently travel the bridge each day. Have you checked out the multiuse paths along the Pensacola Bay Bridge? Here is an aerial photograph taken late last month.

The 10-foot wide, lighted paths feature amazing views of Pensacola Bay along with six scenic overlooks with shaded seating areas for pedestrians and cyclists.

The path is recessed 18-inches below the level of the travel lanes and protected from traffic by a 50-inch barrier wall. Both multiuse paths (east and westbound) are open.

Schools in Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties are back in session. Here are some safety tips for driving in and near school zones:

#1 - When school zone flashers are blinking, stop and yield to pedestrians using the crosswalk or intersection.
#2 - Don't load or unload children across the street from the school. Instead, load or unload adjacent to the school or in the designated parking spaces.
#3 - Don't “double park,” or park your vehicle on the roadway side of a vehicle already parked at the curb. This blocks visibility for children and drivers.
#4 - If the yellow or red lights are flashing, and the stop arm is extended on a school bus, traffic must stop.

The Pensacola Bay Bridge construction team wishes everyone a successful school year!

Here is a look at the original Pensacola Bay Bridge in 1951. The 17th Avenue train trestle is shown in the photo's foreground, with the two-lane Pensacola Bay Bridge in the background.

The two-lane structure was a drawbridge named in honor of local businessman Thomas A. Johnson. Prior to its opening in 1931, travel between Pensacola and what would become the City of Gulf Breeze was possible only by boat.

Tuesday Traffic Tip: Don’t tailgate the car in front of you while traveling in a construction zone.

You may encounter frequent stops or new traffic patterns. The Department of Highway Safety recommends keeping at least two-car lengths between your vehicle and the one in front of you. This is to protect you and other drivers when traveling through highway work zones.

Here is a photo of crews constructing the former Pensacola Bay Bridge in August 1960. The bridge opened to traffic about two months later, on Oct. 31, 1960.

During the current construction project, this structure was deconstructed in a similar manner. The concrete bridge decks were cut free and lifted by a crane onto a nearby demolition barge. The demolition debris was taken off-shore to an area permitted by Escambia County, where it became part of an artificial fishing reef.
