A new school year is here, and with it comes a fresh start, new challenges, new friendships, and plenty of opportunities.

To our students, I’ll offer this advice:

A new school year means new opportunities. Work hard, choose kindness, and never underestimate what you’re capable of accomplishing.

And to the adults, I have an assignment for you all too:

🚌 Watch for school buses and STOP when those red lights are flashing.
🚸 Slow down and stay alert in school zones and neighborhoods.
📵 Put the phone down and keep your eyes on the road.
⏰ Give yourself a few extra minutes. Morning traffic is going to take a little longer.

There will be excited kids, nervous kids, new drivers, school buses, and parents trying to remember where the drop-off line starts. Pack your patience and pay attention.

Let’s do our part to make sure every student has a great first day and, most importantly, gets to school and back home safely.

Have a great school year, Escambia County!

Escambia County schools will be back in session on Wednesday, August 12th!

The Escambia County Sheriff's Office reminds you...
🛑🚌 IF THE LIGHTS ARE FLASHING, DON'T BE PASSING 🛑🚌

⚠️ All drivers moving in either direction on a two-way street must stop for a school bus displaying a stop signal, and must remain stopped until the road is clear of children AND the school bus stop arm is withdrawn. (see diagram, TWO-LANE)

⚠️On a highway divided by a paved median, all drivers moving in either direction must stop for a school bus displaying a stop signal, and must remain stopped until the road is clear of children AND the school bus stop arm is withdrawn. (see diagram, MULTI-LANE)

⚠️The only time traffic approaching an oncoming school bus does not need to stop, is if there is a raised barrier such as a concrete divider or at least five feet of unpaved space separating the lanes of traffic. (see diagram, DIVIDED HIGHWAY)

⚠️On a highway divided by a raised barrier or an unpaved median at least 5 feet wide, drivers moving in the opposite direction do not have to stop for the bus (painted lines or pavement markings are not considered barriers). However, these motorists should slow down and watch for students loading or unloading from the bus. (see diagram, DIVIDED HIGHWAY)

🇺🇸💜 PURPLE HEART DAY 💜🇺🇸

Today, August 7, we pause to honor the brave U.S. service members who have been wounded or killed in combat. The Purple Heart is our nation’s oldest military decoration, established by General George Washington in 1782.

The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office was honored to provide the venue for Senator Ashley Moody 's Purple Heart Day ceremony. Although she wasn't able to leave Washington, Senator Moody joined via Zoom to welcome those in attendance and thanked Sheriff Chip W. Simmons for standing in and hosting the ceremony.

As Sheriff Simmons looked around the room filled with veterans and their families, he said, “This may be the greatest collection of heroes in one room that we’ve ever had at the Sheriff’s Office.”

During the ceremony, four distinguished veterans received Congressional Record recognition for their service and sacrifice from Senator Moody's Office:

🇺🇸 1st & 2nd Congressional Record Recognitions
U.S. Army Sergeant Jason Crawford
U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Dustin Tuller

🇺🇸 3rd Congressional Record Recognition
U.S. Marine Corps Sergeant Peter McKanna

🇺🇸 4th Congressional Record Recognition
U.S. Navy Commander Douglas Doughty

Today, we honor not only these four heroes, but every Purple Heart recipient and the tremendous sacrifice represented by this distinguished medal. 💜🇺🇸
