Meet Crystal.

Crystal is a former United States Navy mortician, award-winning photographer, and proud military spouse whose life has been shaped by service, family, and resilience. During her time in the Navy, she had the unique responsibility of caring for fallen service members and supporting their families with dignity and compassion.

As the wife of a retired U.S. Army combat infantryman and the mother of an active-duty U.S. Army infantryman, Crystal understands military life from multiple perspectives. She has experienced the challenges, sacrifices, and moments of uncertainty that come with loving and supporting those who serve.

In Episode 5 of The Journey Unbound, Crystal shares her perspective on service, family, and the importance of connection through life's most difficult seasons. Her story offers a powerful reminder that the impact of service extends far beyond the individual wearing the uniform.

Today, Crystal enjoys photography, fishing, and spending time outdoors with her husband and their two dogs while continuing to support the military and veteran community in meaningful ways.

Meet Jason.

Jason Ladd is a retired Army combat infantryman, author, and fishing charter captain in Port St. Lucie, Florida. After transitioning from military service, he built a new chapter centered around family, faith, the outdoors, and helping fellow veterans find connection and community.

In Episode 5 of The Journey Unbound, Jason shares how service can continue long after the uniform comes off. Through his fishing charters and advocacy work, he has created opportunities for veterans to spend time together, have honest conversations, and rediscover a sense of purpose and belonging.

His story is a reminder that healing often happens in community and that some of the most meaningful acts of service begin when we simply make space for others to be seen, heard, and understood.

The season finale of The Journey Unbound is here.

Episode 5, “Beyond the Call: The Road Forward,” brings the journey to Port St. Lucie, Florida, where conversations around service, purpose, community, and healing take a hopeful step forward.

In this final chapter, Josh connects with veterans who continue serving others long after military life ends, reminding us that healing often begins through honest conversation, shared experience, and simply showing up for one another.

This series was never just about the miles travelled. It was about bringing awareness to moral injury and creating space for stories that too often stay hidden.

Some of the most meaningful moments from The Journey Unbound happen between takes, when the cameras are rolling but the conversation simply feels like two people sharing their experiences.

While filming Episode 4 in Pensacola, Florida, Josh Jakub spent time with first responders and law enforcement officers, including Rachel Sarkis of the Lubbock County Sheriff's Office. From conversations along the beach to time spent connecting with those who understand the weight of service, these moments reflected the heart of Behind the Shield.

Behind every interview is a story, and behind every story is a person willing to be honest about the challenges they have faced and the hope that helps them move forward.

Meet Rachel Sarkis

Rachel grew up in Lovington, New Mexico and moved to Lubbock, Texas during high school in 2012, where she has remained ever since. She attended college from 2015–2020, earning two associate degrees in Criminal Justice and Law Enforcement Technology from South Plains College in 2018, followed by a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Lubbock Christian University in 2020.

Rachel began volunteering with the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team as a civilian role-player in 2016 while also completing the Peace Officer Academy through South Plains College. She later served as a reserve officer with the Levelland Police Department from 2019–2020 before joining the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division in June 2020, where she currently serves as a Field Training Officer and Instructor.

Outside of work, Rachel enjoys reading, making art, and spending time with her three puppies.

In this episode, Josh connects with first responders in Pensacola, Florida, exploring the realities of grief, moral injury, and the unseen weight carried by those who serve others every day. Through honest conversations around faith, identity, and healing, this chapter shines a light on the cost that often goes unspoken.
