I am sad to report that the pelican passed over night . . .
He had a break in his left leg along with a wound under his left wing. We took him to North Central Animal Hospital and Dr. Frank examined him. Dr. Frank assessed that he could have surgery but would have limited mobility. She also concern that there could be some nerve issues, but until the leg was pinned, we would not be able to tell if that was the case. We then spoke to the Dr. Todd Schmitt with Sea World San Diego Zoo, who specializes in pelicans. He felt that as long as he was able to be weight bearing on that leg he could be released and a person who always wants to give a pelican a second chance.
We scheduled the surgery for this week.
Our goal is always to return a bird to the life they were meant to lead. It's a hard decision to euthanize a bird without giving it every chance possible. The surgery was going to be a difficult road for him with over 6 weeks of rehabilitation.
I cannot thank everyone who helped in this endeavor especially those who brought us fish!!! He really loved the live fish. We also purchased a circulating pump so he would think that the frozen ones were alive.
I truly think that despite our desire to save him, sometimes they help us to not have to make those tough decisions and pass on their own. I know that he was someplace save and fed and left in peace and I have no regrets.
Thank you again,
Jody
