The Peoria County Election Commission is hiring an Election Specialist - Warehouse Operations, as well as an Election Specialist, Part Time.

The Election Specialist - Warehouse Operations manages, maintains, and troubleshoots voting system equipment, while staying in compliance with local, state, and federal election laws. The Election Specialist also assists with various duties relating to the administration of elections and voter registration. Additionally, the Election Specialist will train and supervise temporary election specialists and election judges.

The Election Specialist - General Operations (Part Time) assists with various duties relating to the administration of elections and voter registration, assists with training and appointment of election judges and deputy registrars, and prepares correspondence and provides clerical support.

The United States Election Assistance Commission (EAC) has designated August 11, 2026, as National Poll Worker Recruitment Day. This day of action is meant to assist election judge recruitment efforts in communities across the country.

The Peoria County Election Commission is actively recruiting Election Judges (i.e., poll workers) for the upcoming November 3, 2026, General Election and beyond.

“Election Judges play a critical role in the administration of elections. Every polling place requires folks from the community willing to serve. If you want to see and understand the safeguards that protect the integrity of our elections, there is no better way than serving as an Election Judge” said Jessily Joseph, Executive Director for the Peoria County Election Commission.

Election Judges’ duties include setting up the polling place and voting equipment, checking in and processing voters, demonstrating voting procedures, assisting voters, closing the polls, tallying location results, and ensuring chain of custody procedures. Election Judges are required to work the full day on Election Day (from 5 a.m. to after 8 p.m.) and complete both in-person and online training.

To be an Election Judge in Illinois, you must meet the following requirements:
• One must be a U.S .Citizen
• One must be a Registered Voter in Peoria County
• Be able to speak, read, and write the English language
• Be able to lift 20 lbs
• Be of good repute and character
• One must represent an established political party
• Cannot be a candidate for any office in the election or an elected Precinct Committeeperson
• Cannot be a registered s*x offender

If you are 17 years old, you may be eligible to serve if you are a junior or senior in good standing with a GPA of at least 3.0.

Election Judges will be selected and trained by the Election Commission and will receive compensation of $250 for their work on Election Day. The Peoria County Election Commission is mailing a Permanent Vote by Mail Application to all registered voters not already enrolled in the Permanent Vote by Mail Program. We are required to send this application prior to every Federal General Election per Illinois Statute.

Permanent Vote by Mail is an Illinois program that allows you to fill out one application to vote by mail in all future elections in which you are eligible to vote. You can opt in or opt out of this program. Enrollment in the program is completely optional. This program provides a convenient option for voters who prefer to vote by mail as they no longer must submit a new application prior to each election.

Jessily Joseph, Executive Director for the Peoria County Election Commission stated, “You’ll be receiving a white and pink postcard containing the Permanent Vote by Mail application in your mailbox in the coming days. Be on the lookout! If you plan to opt in or opt out, we ask that you return the card as soon as possible.”

There are three options to choose between for the Permanent Vote by Mail Program:

1. You can choose to only receive ballots in elections that do not require a party designation. Typically, these are General Elections. You would not be mailed ballots during Primary Elections.
2. You can choose to vote by mail in all elections moving forward. This option requires selecting what party ballot you would like to receive in Primary Elections.
3. You can choose to opt out of the Permanent Vote by Mail Program. You will no longer receive this application prior to every Federal General Election.

Executive Director Joseph added, “We are required by law to send this application to you every 2 years. If you prefer to vote in-person on Election Day or through Early Voting, then please select the third option and opt out. This helps us reduce unnecessary mailings and saves taxpayer dollars down the line as we will no longer have to send this mailing to you.”

The Peoria County Election Commission is now hiring for the Executive Director position.

The Executive Director is responsible for all aspects of the administration of the Election Commission. Duties include the application of all statutory requirements in maintaining the permanent registry of voters and in the planning, organizing and conducting of local, state and federal elections in the County of Peoria. The Executive Director is the liaison to the community, other government agencies and members of the press for the Board of Election Commissioners.

Minimum Bachelor's degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, or related field with a minimum of two years of both management and election administration experience. Must possess a strong technical aptitude and strong knowledge of Microsoft Windows-based software. Must be detail-oriented and able to work under the pressure of deadlines. Use personal judgment and initiative to develop effective solutions to challenges. Strong public relations skills. Must have a valid Illinois driver’s license.
