What's in your bag?

For harm reductionists, Narcan is a non-negotiable. Other items of course vary by person and path. For Kristen, who spends her days at JOLT advocating, listening with empathy & helping people make their next positive change, here are her latest essentials: some art for inspiration and good memories, chill-out aids like a stress ball and w**d suckers (for clock out time), and a big black sharpie for the next opportunity to fight for human rights💪 There's a story in this stash of one person's fight for life - not just their own, but for many ❤

Comment below, besides the breakfast bar crumbs crushed at the bottom, what in your bag tells a story?

What is "Fair Housing"?

Before Fair Housing Month ends, we want to highlight housing as a HUGE part of what is called "Recovery Capital". It's the internal and external resources everyone needs to live the life they want to live!

Personal recovery capital starts with the basics: mental & physical wellbeing, financial stability, education, transportation and importantly, housing! These components are foundational to recovery, and we are grateful for every community partner making a difference in these areas.

Not only is housing essential, but fair housing is the law! We have learned so much from our friends at Prairie State Legal about what housing discrimination can sound like:
“We rent only to English speakers.”
“No, we cannot allow you to build a ramp for your wheelchair.”
“I prefer to rent to women.”
“We don’t allow support animals, unless it is a certified seeing-eye dog.”
“We don’t offer mortgage loans in that part of town.”
“The apartment has already been rented (and further investigation reveals that it had not in fact been rented).”
"We don't accept vouchers."
"If you have a voucher, you must make three times the rent as income."

If you believe you have been the victim of unfair housing, please call Prairie State Legal at 855-FHP-PSLS (855-347-7757) and check out their website and Fb page. Comment below, have you heard these things?

Do you know about Person-First Language? Instead of using a label for someone else that could be stigmatizing, we focus first on the person and then use neutral language to describe actions or situations. No judgement, blame, or moral failing attached.

In her TED Talk Why 1st Person Language Can Save A Life, Rebecca Throop said that the SHAME of negative labels like "drunk" had pushed her into emotional isolation. That's the last thing we want for anyone in our community.

Now, not everyone is the same. People may choose to self-identify using different language/labels. The bottom line remains: words matter. And we use People-First Language because people matter!

Let us know in the comments, have words mattered in your own life?❤️
