also attractive parks with ponds, forests, roads and paths that followed the natural contours of the land and nurtured native and exotic trees and plants. Before the widespread development of public parks, these cemeteries provided a place for all the people to enjoy refined outdoor recreation amidst art and sculpture previously available only for the wealthy. Here are some other interesting facts about Springdale:

•Springdale is a nonsectarian cemetery that fulfills its commitment to perpetual care and respect.
•Springdale is one of the largest cemeteries in Illinois. Some architectural highlights are the beautifully restored public mausoleum, 15 private mausoleums, nine public statues and multiple tree monuments throughout the grounds.
•Springdale is the final resting place for people of many nationalities including African, English, French, German, Greek, Irish, Italian, Korean, Polish, Russian, Scandinavian, Spanish, Vietnamese and more.
•Springdale, founded in 1854, has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 2004.
•Springdale is a cemetery that is also a park, a museum, a game preserve, a library, a historical site and a classroom. For example, it is an ecosystem that has been used to study erosion control and it has the last large tract of pristine prairie land in a major metropolitan area.
•Springdale is ever enhancing its facilities and upgrading the trail system that runs through the cemetery, including one mile of the Rock Island Trail that is actively enjoyed by thousand of runners, walkers and cyclists.
•Historic reenactments are held at Springdale in the fall and draw hundreds of people to celebrate and remember the interesting lives of those who are buried here—people who created Peoria's history and whose decisions and actions shaped the city and region we proudly call home.
•Springdale is an impressive natural laboratory for studying rare plants and animals.

Last night, Springdale Cemetery General Manager Aaron Comte was honored with the Silver Medal for Good Citizenship by the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution — one of America’s most prestigious patriotic organizations. 🎖️

The award was presented by Illinois Society Sons of the American Revolution President Jeff Case and Captain Zeally Moss Chapter Sons of the American Revolution President Doug Holmes in recognition of Aaron’s leadership in bringing the Revolutionary War Patriot Plaza to life at Springdale Cemetery.

The SAR’s mission is to preserve the principles of American liberty and our Constitutional Republic — honoring the forefathers who gave us the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, an Independent Supreme Court, and a nation of free men. It is deeply fitting that this project, which will stand as a permanent tribute to those ideals, earned this recognition.

We are so proud of Aaron and grateful for his dedication to Springdale, to Peoria, and to the memory of those who built this country. 🇺🇸

Today is National Women’s Equality Day, and as students head back to school, Springdale Cemetery remembers the trailblazers who fought for a more just world.

Today, we honor the incredible legacy of Lydia Moss Bradley, an outstanding businesswoman and the visionary founder of Bradley University.

Lydia was also an early member of the Peoria Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She rests alongside her father, Revolutionary War Captain Zeally Moss, in the Bradley family circle located in the Mt. Prospect area.

What women trailblazers do you most admire?

Located in a quiet, wooded area of Springdale, Prairie Gardens allows for permanent memorialization of cremated remains. It provides a lasting tribute for the deceased and gives friends and family a place to gather now and in the future.

Choose to scatter cremated remains throughout this wooded area or place them in “columbarium”—benches with niches for urns or other containers. There’s plenty of space available for private services, as well as options for memorial markers.
