Wisconsin’s Tornado Awareness Week is April 11-15th – the highlight of the week is the Statewide Tornado Drill on April 14th.
At 1:00pm, Dispatch will announce over the radio that the National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch. This announcement will mirror an actual announcement and provide basic instructions to take. The primary action during a Tornado Watch is to continue to monitor the situation and prepare for a Tornado Warning.
At 1:45pm, Dispatch will announce over the radio that the National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Warning. Again, this announcement will mirror an actual announcement and provide basic instructions to take. The storm warning sirens should also be sounding during this time frame.
At 2:00pm, Dispatch will issue an all clear announcement to end the drill and the sounding the “All Clear” siren (noon siren).
As part of Tornado Awareness Week, I encourage you to sign up for local alerts and warnings The Pepin County Sheriff's Office and Pepin County Emergency Management Office recommends the following:
• Sign up for Nixle to receive texts/emails about emergency situations wherever you live and work at www.nixle.com – it’s free and only takes a couple minutes
• Review with your family and friends actions to take in order to be prepared for a tornado or other possible disasters; brochures are available on the bulletin board outside of the Emergency Management /Zoning Office. We have additional resources inside our office, including activity books for children. Please stop in if you have any questions or would like preparedness materials.
Please note that the State of Wisconsin has decided to hold a second drill on the evening of the April 14th, so that you can test your emergency response actions with your family. Use this opportunity to ensure that you are prepared for an emergency and that your NOAA Weather Radio is working properly.
