Our thoughts and prayers are with the members of the Massachusetts Department of Corrections on the Line of Duty Death of CO John Edward’s. The members of the DOC are often overlooked but are an important part of our state’s Public Safety community. We stand with their members and grieve the passing of CO Edwards.

It is with profound sadness that the Massachusetts Department of Correction announces the sudden line-of-duty death of Correction Officer John Edwards, a 28-year veteran of the Department assigned to North Central Correctional Institution in Gardner. This morning, Officer Edwards suffered a medical emergency at his post and passed away.

Commissioner Shawn Jenkins issued the following statement in tribute to the fallen officer:

“Today, we mourn the loss of Correction Officer John Edwards, who served the Department of Correction for nearly three decades with unwavering dedication to our public safety mission. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues, and offer them our full support in the difficult days ahead. His service will never be forgotten.”

Did you notice the flags along Main Street recently? A little piece of American History in our own town. Thank you Mead Tree for putting these up!

We've had a lot of calls on this...anyone else looking and wondering what flag it might be??

It's the Pepperell Liberty Flag and it is a historical artifact representing the town's commitment to liberty during the American Revolution. It was first raised on August 29, 1774, as a display of defiance against British rule, and is considered one of the first municipal Liberty Flags in the colonies. The flag, described as five yards long and four broads wide, was created by local residents and is now commemorated in reenactments and historical events, particularly during the town's 250th anniversary celebrations in 2025. The flag's design and significance has been researched and celebrated to honor Pepperell's rich history and its role in the fight for independence.
