A Happy Ending for a Little Fawn

What started as a concerning call at Wilkins Farm turned into a wonderful example of our community working together.

A young fawn was found in a shed, appearing to have possibly been struck by a vehicle. Startled and frightened, it ran into a pond behind the farm.

Officer James Monis quickly responded and safely carried the exhausted fawn out of the water. Drones were then deployed in an effort to locate its mother, but despite a thorough search, she could not be found.

Animal Control Officer Mary Letourneau was contacted and immediately coordinated with a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. Thanks to the kindness of a Good Samaritan who volunteered to transport the fawn to Tufts Wildlife Clinic, it was examined for injuries and illness. Fortunately, its injuries were not too severe.

The little fawn will now be cared for by wildlife rehabilitation professionals while it heals, with the goal of returning to the wild when it's healthy and ready.

A heartfelt thank you to Officer James Monis, Animal Control Officer Mary Letourneau, the drone team, the Good Samaritan who provided transportation, and the staff at Tufts for giving this little one a second chance. It truly takes a community working together to make stories like this possible.

MassDOT is in the process of implementing a lane constriction on the Main Street Bridge. The southside lane (eastbound) has a structural steel member that is severely compromised and they will be adjusting the lanes to ensure that traffic is not passing over it. There will be no weight restriction at this time as the rest of the Bridge is in good condition. They will be placing jersey barriers and restriping the lanes to allow for two lanes of traffic to continue using the Bridge. The process of repairs will take years to go through as the planning/funding/design/permitting and construction process can take an extended period of time.

National Public Safety Telecommunications Week is a time to recognize and honor the dispatchers who act as a liaison between the public and emergency services during times of need.

Here in Pepperell, our dispatching is handled professionally by the Patriot Regional Emergency Communications Center and its dedicated employees.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association, public safety telecommunicators receive 240 million 911 calls each year. No matter the circumstances, each call requires dispatchers to remain composed as they coordinate with first responders to ensure the community’s safety.

PPD would like to thank all of our partners at PRECC!
