Phase 1 of the South Perkasie Covered Bridge rehabilitation concluded on Friday. Contractors elevated the bridge 12 inches, installed tie downs, and the removed timbers are stored on site. Almost all of the lattice truss will be preserved and the top deck will be saved, along with 11 of 12 of the ancient transverse beams. The roof and north siding will be replaced. The new abutments will be closer to the ballpark away from the creek. The bridge will be framed at the current location and moved to the new abutments in the late spring.

An update on the South Perkasie Covered Bridge project. Phase 1 is nearly complete. Eastern Highway Systems has removed the deck system. It will complete a temporary support system next week using steel beams connected to helical piles to stabilize the bridge. Over the next few months while we wait for timber for above the deck, Eastern will work with Wood Research and Development, and Lancaster Timber Frames to determine which deck timbers can be re-used. We are hoping to start framing by January depending on timber availability.

The more famous Chapel Covered Bridge in Lucerne, Switzerland. So many people talking selfies that it is tricky getting photos during the day. Two-thirds of the bridge was destroyed by a fire in the 1990s and it was restored using traditional framing techniques.

At the Spreurer covered bridge in Lucerne, Switzerland, parts of which date back to the 1500s. The Swiss have strict historical preservation standards that keep the north and south spans authentic. The arch is probably newer but it uses king and queen posts and heavy timbering.

If you are interested, Perkasie Borough has a live we**am today and tomorrow at the South Perkasie Covered Bridge as Eastern Highway Services removes the bridge's two decks. The top deck was installed around 1919. No one has seen the lower deck since then. We're hoping to date the lower deck by the nails and wood type. It could be the 1832 deck. Link to live cam:

The latest on the proposed land use next to Landis and Mavis Tire. The same applicant wants to put a privately owned recycling center on the property, which is a use by right under the Zoning Code. They went before the Perkasie planning commission to present a spec plan.

Perkasie officials formally opposed plans for luxury apartments. Now, a recycling center is being proposed.
