DL EXAM STATIONS

Beginning May 15, 2020 DPS will allow walk-ins at all offices for driver license and/or Oklahoma identification card processing. DPS has been operating on an appointment-only basis since offices opened to the public on May 1. Social distancing guidelines will continue to be enforced and citizens visiting our offices will still be required to wear a face covering and have their temperature taken before entering the building.

Also beginning May 15, DPS will resume all drive tests for Class D licenses as well as Commercial Driver Licenses (CDLs.) These will be by appointment only and vehicles used for the drive test will have to be disinfected by the applicant. The applicant will also be required to wear a face covering that covers their mouth and nose. Appointments can be made by visiting ok.gov/dps and clicking on "Online Services."

DPS is continuing to waive school enrollment verification and documentation of reading proficiency (the eighth-grade English language arts assessment) for those under 18 years of age. The reading proficiency requirement is permanently waived for all students who are eighth-graders during the 2019-2020 school year.

Oklahomans can renew a driver license or identification card online at my.ok.gov.

All extended expiration dates of Class D driver licenses, state-issued identification cards, handicap parking placards, CDLs and Commercial Learner Permits (CLPs) will be considered expired after June 30, 2020.

REAL ID

The COVID-19 pandemic has also pushed back the DPS timeline for issuing REAL ID to Oklahomans. DPS has not been able to get the new work stations across the state and has not not been able to train DPS employees and tag agents because of social distancing guidelines. DPS is getting closer to being ready to start the phased roll-out of the new systems to DPS stations and tag agents. We are anticipating beginning training around the middle of June for a deployment start date of July 1.

The most important thing Oklahomans need to know concerning Real ID and the new OK credentials is they DO NOT need to be in a hurry! Despite the fact DPS has chosen not to delay the project, the Department of Homeland security and TSA have extended the deadline for needing a Real ID compliant license to board a domestic airline to October 1, 2021. There is no reason for the public to be in a rush to get a Real ID compliant license.

People who do not plan on flying, visiting a nuclear facility or military base, or entering a federal building for reasons other than jury duty DO NOT need to get a Real ID.

We now have well over a year to get compliant credentials to people who need them, as opposed to just a few months.

COVID-19 UPDATE as of 30 APR 2020

Our lobby IS OPEN to the public, limited to seven people in the lobby at any time.

Select DPS driver license offices will be open to the public on Friday, May 1 by appointment only. To make an appointment, visit www.ok.gov/dps and click on "Online Services." Every person visiting a DPS facility will be required to wear a face mask that completely covers their nose and mouth and will also have their temperature checked. Guests will have to furnish their own mask. Only people with appointments will be allowed inside the building, and only in a volume that will allow for social distancing in accordance with CDC guidelines.

Drive tests continue to be suspended and DPS has a target date of May 15 to resume those. While DPS won't be conducting these tests, anyone with a learner's permit can contact a Class D Commercial Driving Education School with a DPS-certified designated examiner to take that test.

DPS is in the process of installing acrylic sneeze guards at all driver license facilities as one of many precautions being taken to ensure the health and safety of our employees and guests. Only locations that have this protective equipment will be open to the public beginning May 1. For a list of those locations, visit www.ok.gov/dps.

DPS will continue to offer renewal of Class D Driver Licenses and State Issued Identification Cards online. Visit my.ok.gov to access this service.

All extended expiration dates of Class D Driver Licenses, State Issued Identification Cards, Handicap Parking Placards, Commercial Driver Licenses (CDLs) and Commercial Learner Permits (CLPs) will be considered expired after June 30, 2020.

Previous extensions do not apply to invalid driver licenses due to suspension, revocation or denial.

The COVID-19 pandemic has also pushed back the DPS timeline for issuing REAL ID to Oklahomans. In late March, the Department of Homeland Security delayed the REAL ID enforcement deadline another 12 months to Oct. 1, 2021 because of the pandemic. DPS was originally set to begin issuing REAL IDs in April but because of the challenges posed by the virus, that date has been delayed. DPS has not been able to get the new work stations across the state and has not not been able to train DPS employees and tag agents because of social distancing guidelines. Employees have still been working diligently on getting REAL ID processes up and running and DPS hopes to be offering this service soon.
