“The consequences of illiteracy are many and harmful in several respects. As well as affecting illiterate individuals themselves in their daily lives and often jeopardizing their future, this scourge has a significant effect on society, both socially and economically.”

Illiteracy affects individuals in their daily lives and jeopardize their future. This scourge has also an effect on society, both socially and economically.

We are saddened to share that Beverly Cleary, one of the most beloved children’s books authors of all time, passed away yesterday, March 25, at 104 years old.

Looking back, Beverly would often say, ‘I’ve had a lucky life,’ and generations of readers count themselves lucky, too—lucky to have the very real characters she created, including Henry Huggins, Ramona and Beezus Quimby, and Ralph S. Mouse, as true friends who helped shape their growing-up years. https://bit.ly/3lTZovk

Larry McMurtry, Novelist And Screenwriter Of The West, Has Died At Age 84

What a loss 😢

The prolific, Pulitzer-winning author and Oscar-winning screenwriter was beloved for his riveting, unsentimental depictions of the American West.

Do you have a favorite Larry McMurtry quote or character?

In over 30 novels and across dozens of screenplays, non-fiction works and memoirs, McMurtry became a beloved, yet unsentimental chronicler of the American West.

I know that it's barely Spring.....but I'd like to talk about SUMMER for a minute...

I'd like to talk about the fact that we are currently planning an actual SUMMER READING PROGRAM at the Library for Summer 2021.

Things will be different. There will be come and go activities, outdoor, and possibly off-site programs. Registration will likely be required and there will be safety measures in place as well. BUT...there will be activities for all ages during June & July and we hope that excites you.

We will be publishing a schedule before the end of the school year, with all the details how to register and participate.

The national Summer Reading theme is "Tails & Tales" and we will be seeking out local individuals, organizations and businesses who work with animals to help us plan programs and activities. Stay tuned for details.

Thanks to a generous donation we now have two copies of the new Krisitn Hannah dust bowl novel "The Four Winds." One copy is available with no wait.

About the book:
Texas, 1934. Millions are out of work and a drought has broken the Great Plains. Farmers are fighting to keep their land and their livelihoods as the crops are failing, the water is drying up, and dust threatens to bury them all. One of the darkest periods of the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl era, has arrived with a vengeance.

In this uncertain and dangerous time, Elsa Martinelli—like so many of her neighbors—must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or go west, to California, in search of a better life. The Four Winds is an indelible portrait of America and the American Dream, as seen through the eyes of one indomitable woman whose courage and sacrifice will come to define a generation.

Great American Clean Up / Trash Off
Saturday, March 27th

8:00 - 12:00 p.m.

The Great American Clean Up (Trash Off) is once again coming to Perkins. The event will be held Saturday, March 27, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

All volunteers will meet at the Lions Den in Downtown Perkins at 8 a.m. for Breakfast, before going out into the community in groups to pick up trash. We will conclude around 11:30/12:00, or as areas are finished up!

This is a great community service activity for students needing community service hours.

Groups will be given gloves, vests, and trash bags - all provided by ODOT - and will be sent out to pick up trash along the highways, and throughout the parks.

THE MORE VOLUNTEERS WE HAVE, THE MORE WE CAN ACCOMPLISH!

Help us Clean Up Perkins on March 27 by picking up trash!

"Oklahoma's Spring Cleaning Event - In 2011, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation's Trash-Off became Oklahoma's signature event in the Great American Cleanup, the nation's largest community improvement program, held annually from March 1 - May 31. Each spring, the ODOT Trash-Off brings together thousands of volunteers who are dedicated to making Oklahoma cleaner, greener and more beautiful."

PLEASE NOTE - this is not the same as City-Wide Clean Up, with Davis Sanitation and the city providing trash trucks and dumpsters to pick up large items. That event will be held on Saturday, April 17.
