⚖️ The State Has Rested.
The May Jury Trial Term has concluded for the Houston County Solicitor-General’s Office.
State Court conducts criminal jury trials in two-week terms, and this term began with more than 450 cases on the trial calendar. Through the hard work of prosecutors, defense attorneys, court staff, and judges, that number was reduced to approximately 80 cases by the start of jury selection.
Over the past two weeks, 8 juries were selected, resulting in 7 cases being resolved and 1 case being continued. Of those resolutions, the State secured 4 guilty verdicts and 2 guilty pleas.
While successful prosecutions are an important part of our mission, our office remains committed to something even greater: justice.
Justice is not always measured by a guilty verdict or a guilty plea. Our Constitution guarantees every citizen the right to a trial by jury, and at the Solicitor-General’s Office, our responsibility is to present the evidence, uphold the law, and ensure the State fulfills its duty. The jury then performs its vital role as the finder of fact.
We are grateful for every juror who served, every citizen who answered the call to serve, and every member of the justice system who worked tirelessly throughout this trial term.
Thank you to the citizens of Houston County for your service, your sacrifice, and your commitment to our system of justice.
⚖️ Justice Served. Justice Preserved.
