Update: The Perryville Battlefield State Historic Site is the “Best in Kentucky” Hall of Fame, having won in the category of Civil War Site multiple times. The order of finish for this year’s “Best in Kentucky” will be announced during the Best in Kentucky Awards Show at 10am (EDT) on Wednesday, Aug. 19, via Kentucky Living’s YouTube channel, page and KentuckyLiving.com. We are honored that Perryville is in the Hall of Fame. Sorry for any confusion from the former post.

Special thanks to Dana Brown for sharing her ancestors photograph. Private Henry Bailey was in the 105th Ohio Infantry. Henry Bailey was born on June 1, 1842 in Mahoning County, Ohio. He enlisted in the 105th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on August 20, 1862, at the age of twenty. During the Battle of Perryville, he was wounded in the right arm. He was mustered out of June 3, 1865 in Washington, D.C. By the 1890 census he was living in Mercer, Pennsylvania. His profession was a miner. By 1897, he was listed as an invalid. Later he moved to Los Angeles, California. He died on October 28, 1918, at the age of seventy-six. He is buried in the Oak Hill, Cemetery, in Los Angeles. His son Henry S. Bailey, was a lieutenant in the Company B, 363 Infantry, American Expeditionary Forces and was wounded in France in December 1918.

Attention: Under Kentucky State Parks Regulations (304 KAR 1:050) KRS 148.021 The Kentucky Administrative Regulations for Metal Detectors state that the use of metal detectors is prohibited in all Kentucky state parks. Under KRS 148.991, unauthorized digging or surface disturbance in a state park can result in fines of $10 to $100, or a jail sentence of up to 10 days. Since the Perryville Battlefield is covered under the Kentucky Antiquities Act, violating the Kentucky Antiquities Act (Kentucky Revised Statutes KRS 164.715 and KRS 164.720) on state or municipal lands is a Class D felony, punishable by up to 5 years in prison, substantial fines, and the mandatory forfeiture of all equipment used in the offense. Over the weekend metal detectorists were seen metal detecting on the battlefield. Please report any incidents to the park manager with as much detail as possible including photographs of license plates.
