In the last few months, two of “Maryland’s Finests” hung up their Stetson to embrace retirement life. First Sergent Ronald Stevens (pictured left) retired after twenty-six years of service. He also served his country, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army. Yesterday Detective Sergeant William McFarland (pictured right) retired after thirty years of service to the citizens of Maryland. Thank you both for your dedication and commitment to the Maryland State Police. We wish you both well with your future endeavors.

Another JFK Trooper injured while on a traffic stop. Luckily the Trooper only sustained minor injuries and is recovering at home. According Maryland law, drivers must switch lanes to leave at least one lane in between their vehicles and stopped emergency vehicles, tow trucks, and law enforcement vehicles. If drivers cannot safely switch lanes, they must slow their speeds and proceed carefully past stopped vehicles. #MoveOver Maryland State Police

Tis the season of giving. Troopers have been out spreading holiday cheer to the 3 families we adopted this year. Each year, struggling families who do not qualify for “Shop with a Cop” are adopted by the JFK Highway Barrack as part of our community outreach. Through our in-house food drive and generous monetary donations by members of the barrack we were able to provide furniture, clothing, food and gifts for all 3 families, which included 8 kids. For us, it is truly the most rewarding time of the year.

Congratulations to Trooper Cruz, Trooper Pepe and Trooper Delong! Three of JFK’s finest!

During a combined promotion and Freedom Award ceremony Wednesday, Maryland State Police Superintendent Colonel William Pallozzi presented the Department’s Freedom Award to 17 troopers and two civilian employees, all of whom serve or have served in the United States Armed Forces. The troopers were members of Class 148 and Class 149, the last two Maryland State Police Academy graduating classes. The two civilian employees have recently joined the Maryland State Police.

The Maryland State Police established the Freedom Award to acknowledge each member of the Maryland State Police who served in the military or is currently serving as a member of the National Guard or Reserves. There are 419 military veterans, including Colonel Pallozzi, currently serving in the Maryland State Police. Of those, 73 are active members of the National Guard or Reserves. Nine of those personnel are currently deployed on active duty around the world. Since the terrorist attacks on 9/11, at least one member of the Maryland State Police has been continually deployed on military duty in the war on terror.

***SOBRIETY CHECKPOINT***

On May 24, 2019, the JFK Highway Barrack will be conducting a sobriety checkpoint in Harford County as a part of "CheckPoint StrikeForce". The goal is to reduce the number of alcohol and drug impaired drivers on the roadway and educate the public on the dangers of impaired driving. If you plan to drink this holiday weekend, plan a designated driver. A ride home is cheap compared to the costs you will incur if arrested for impaired driving.

CheckPoint StrikeForce is a multi-jurisdictional program in Virginia, Washington DC, Delaware, West Virginia, and Maryland to combat drunk driving. "Each year, nearly 12,000 people die on our roads due to impaired driving." Go to www.checkpointstrikeforce.net for more information.

Maryland state troopers joined on Wednesday with other allied law enforcement agencies from Harford and Cecil counties to conduct a cooperative initiative that targeted distracted and impaired drivers and motorists that failed to adhere to the state’s “Move Over” laws.

The enforcement effort took place along the entire stretch of Interstate 95 in Cecil, Harford and Baltimore counties from the Delaware line to the Baltimore City line. Interstate 695 in the area of Interstate 95 were also included in the enforcement efforts.

Overall, the initiative, which took place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., yielded the following results:

- 289 vehicles stopped
- 159 “Move Over” Law citations
- 72 other citations
- 76 warnings
- 3 safety equipment repair orders
- 1 drug violation (Civil citation)
-1 criminal arrest

Personnel from the Maryland State Police who worked on this initiative included troopers from the JFK, Bel Air and Golden Ring barracks. Other agencies who participated in the effort included the Harford County Sheriff’s Office, Aberdeen Police, Bel Air Police, Cecil County Sheriff’s Office, and the Maryland Transportation Authority Police.

As part of the effort, the electronic overhead signs along the interstate were posted with the message "Move Over Law Strict Enforcement 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.”
