Following up we have the one and only Angela Smallen!
How long have you been with Air Evac, and what were you doing before you became a flight nurse?
I have been with the company just over 2 years now. Prior to Air Evac, I worked mostly ER with a bit of same day surgery mixed in there. Discovered my love of transport while working for a Critical Care Ground Transport company and now, here I am!
What is your favorite part of being a flight nurse at AE80?
This job has several things that I would consider my favorite. I love that I never know what my shift is going to look like. No two days are ever the same. I love the challenges that arise and the chance to use those critical thinking skills that I have spent years developing. I also appreciate the opportunity to work along some amazing paramedics and other nurses, who I feel like all have a unique skill set and knowledge base that I get to tap into while working along side them. Pilots are okay too, most the time.
What advice would you give to someone looking to become a flight nurse?
For someone who wants to get into this job: Keep learning! Take an active role in your own education. Seek out people, courses, and opportunities to challenge what you know and expand on that. Most people are more than willing to teach if you are willing to learn....and everyone has different knowledge, skills and abilities.
