Perth Amboy Historic Preservation

Perth Amboy Historic Preservation Our mission is to preserve and promote the historical, cultural, and architectural heritage of Perth

The Perth Amboy Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) meets on the last Thursday of each month at 7:00 pm, unless noted otherwise. The HPC normally meets in the second floor city council chambers at City Hall, 260 High Street. During the COVID-19 health emergency, with the public unable to freely access City Hall, the HPC has met on occasion at the Brighton Avenue Community Center, at the corner

of Brighton Avenue and Sadowski Parkway. It is likely that the HPC's meeting schedule will continue to be affected by the health emergency during the first few months of 2021. Check this page or the City website for the latest information on monthly meetings.

Walk the Perth Amboy section of the New Jersey Coastal Heritage Trail. Perth Amboy is at the northern end of the Trail—a series of natural and cultural landmarks that tell the story of the state’s maritime heritage.

The New Jersey Coastal Heritage Trail starts at Perth Amboy and runs east along the edge of Raritan Bay to Sandy Hook. It continues south along the entire Atlantic Shore to Cape May Point, before bending north along the shores of Delaware Bay to end at Deepwater.

Locally, you can begin the Trail near the Old Ferry Slip. Continue past the Marina on Front Street before picking up the Harbor Walk behind the Raritan Yacht Club, and following the walkway along Water Street and then Sadowski Parkway. As you stroll along the waterfront, you will see a number of markers explaining parts of Perth Amboy’s maritime history.

Terra cotta is a ceramic material prized in the late 19th and early 20th centuries for use in architectural ornamentation, as well as for objects such as tiles, bricks, statues, pottery, and grave markers. The clay that underlies Perth Amboy and several surrounding towns once supplied dozens of factories that produced terra cotta objects. Perth Amboy was the heart of this Middlesex County "clay district," and many buildings embellished with terra cotta tiles, carvings, and statuary can be seen in Perth Amboy today.

If you want to know more about Perth Amboy’s rich terra cotta heritage, take a look at the documentary, Perth Amboy Terra Cotta. Produced by Perth Amboy City Historian, John Kerry D**e, it explores the history of Perth Amboy's terra cotta industry.

In this documentary, we explore the history of Perth Amboy's terra cotta industry. Included in our film are many rare photographs, including those we copied...
