Our Citizenship Education class is well on its way! Our students learn the material they need to successfully pass the citizenship test as well as improve their English language skills. Here they are playing Jeopardy to practice their skills. A special thank you to New Jersey Center for Hispanic Policy, Research and Development for awarding PRAHD a grant to help make this program possible!

Any parents interested in enrolling their child can join us at our Parent Information Meeting this Wednesday, 12/21/22, at PRAHD's office (see flyer for address) from 6 - 7 pm. We will be explaining the program's goals and your child's expected growth! Light refreshments will be served.

We have a robust program for seniors and they love it here!! We have served more than 1,200 seniors this year and all have access to all 12 programs within the Senior Service Center. Here are some photos of just a few of the programs our seniors participate in such as arts and crafts, wellness fairs, and computer education classes. We also offer physical fitness classes, language translation services, friendly visiting, housekeeping, nutrition education, housing assistance and much more!! If you are a senior and would like to be part of PRAHD's senior service center, or know a senior that would benefit from our services, contact Arelis Leyva at PRAHD.

The holidays at PRAHD are fun! Preschool and Kids Club families had a great time at their Santa's Workshop event. They made ornaments, enjoyed hot cocoa and met Santa!

LIT (Latinos or LatinX in Tech) will be starting January 18, 2023 from 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm. Program participants must be a student in Perth Amboy in grades 8 through 12 and able to met weekly on Wednesdays. Meals will be provided, and transportation is offered, if necessary.

LIT will be a FREE eight-month long leadership, community action, computer science, and technical skills program. Scholars will meet once weekly and also have access to office hours with instructors, the PRAHD facility for “opportunity time,” a library of laptops to borrow while in the facility, and a mentor after completing certain program requirements.

By the end of the summer, Scholars will have:

- Discovered their personal leadership style;
- Identified and researched a community issue;
- Learned how to make an app and a website;
- And finally, combined those skills in a way that they feel will best help their community.

PRAHD is happy to announce that enrollment has begun for LIT (Latinos in Tech)!

LIT will be an eight-month program for students from Perth Amboy in grades 8 to 12 to work on technology projects and leadership development! Participants will express their creativity, thoughts, and opinions while collaborating with other scholars to research and create a website to share with anybody, build an app, and develop and pitch innovative solutions to everyday problems in Perth Amboy!

Arturo Alfonso Schomburg, a Puerto Rican of African and German descent, was born and raised in Santurce, Puerto Rico. Stung by the remarks of a teacher in Puerto Rico who told him that "Negroes have no history," he dedicated his life to proving that teacher wrong. Schomburg understood that knowledge of history was the route to racial dignity. Therefore, he became a historian, writer, and activist; researching and raising awareness of the great contributions that Afro-Latin Americans and Afro-Americans made to society. This month, the country celebrates the history and achievements of African Americans. We celebrate the contributions, large and small, made by the descendants of Africans; contributions that have made our country great. It is important to note that the primary center for African American History is named after Arturo Alfonso Schomburg. The renowned Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, located in the New York Public Library's branch in Harlem, has at its core, Schomburg’s collection of over 10,000 books, manuscripts, prints, photos, letters art, slave narratives, and other materials of African history and any other evidence he could find documenting African contribution to history. PRAHD is proud to honor Schomburg’s legacy recognizing not only the importance of our African ancestors but also the continued contributions of African Americans in our society. For this reason, PRAHD has honored African Americans that have made important contributions to the community in its annual Black History Month celebration. Due to Covid-19 we have postponed this year’s celebration. However, PRAHD continues its tradition of celebrating Black History Month by highlighting some of our past Arturo Alfonso Schomburg award recipients who will share the importance of celebrating Black History Month. Today's Back To School event was a great success thanks to our staff: Jasmin Melendez, Maria Alicea, Amanda Ivan and Lillian Martinez; our volunteers: the Entre Mujeres Cohort 2, and our donors: Marivel Ramirez, Ino Vasquez, PNC, Maria X Sells Real Estate and Lambda Upsilon Lamba, Iota Chapter, Rutgers University. Thanks to all of your donations, we were able to provide school supplies to 150 children!! We also want to thank the City of Perth Amboy and US Census for joining our event and bringing an ice cream truck! A message from our Director of Youth Programs.

In an abundance of caution, PRAHD decided not to open its summer camp this year. However, we could not go the entire summer without doing something fun with the children. Painting by the Bay was a great success!! We had to keep attendance at a minimum to be able to abide by the social distancing requirements, but the kids and their families had a blast. We hope to have another painting event before school reopens. Stay tuned!

Thank you Latinos at Amazon for donating the gardening tables to our Senior Service Center! Our seniors spent the morning planting vegetables, herbs and flowers in their new garden.

Yesterday, it was 19 innocent children in the place where they should be the safest....school.
