I may not be a big baseball fan, but I’m a huge fan of Black history and this made me smile.
The MLB has decided to integrate the Negro Leagues records into its statistical database. This change will take place tomorrow, May 29th.
Now, Josh Gibson a Negro Leagues legend, will replace Ty Cobb as baseball's all-time batting leader in the official MLB records. Only three years after the MLB announced it would elevate the Negro Leagues to major league status, it’s finally happening.
“Gibson will surpass Ty Cobb as the all-time career leader in batting average (.372) and move ahead of Babe Ruth for slugging percentage (.718) and OPS (1.177).
The legendary catcher will hold single-season records in batting average (.466), slugging percentage (.974) and OPS (1.474), the latter of which places him ahead of Barry Bonds’ 2004 season (1.421 OPS).
Gibson played his entire 14-year career in the Negro Leagues.”
Posthumous acknowledgment, awards, accolades and exonerations have become a lot more common in our country. I have very mixed feelings about it, but I do appreciate that wrongs are being righted. It saddens me he didn’t get to hear it while he was alive.
