Using the right knot is critical to making sure your vessel is secure, so it doesn’t drift away. Many people drown every year trying to retrieve their boat, so please wear a life jacket when you’re retrieving anything in the water.

If you own an inflatable life jacket, do you know if it is a manual- or automatic-inflate style? Make sure you know before you get out on the water and might have to depend on it to save your life.

Spring is a good time to check your vessel’s safety gear. Make sure you have enough life jackets that fit everyone who will be riding on your vessel and more importantly make sure everyone wears a life jacket.

Wearing a life jacket increases your survival time in cold water. When safety isn't nearby these positions can retain body heat giving you more time to be rescued. The HELP (Heat Escape Lessoning Posture) and Huddle positions protect critical body areas and slow down loss of heat. Press both arms against your side and keep your head out of the water. If possible, form a huddle with others to conserve body heat.
