Over the past two weeks, all three shifts participated in auto extrication refresher training. Crews reviewed and practiced a variety of tactics and techniques used to gain access to different types of vehicles while working through realistic patient scenarios.

In vehicle rescue incidents, patient care remains our top priority. Through continuous training, our personnel refine the skills needed to provide rapid, effective access to patients while maintaining the highest level of safety and care. Regular hands-on training ensures our crews are prepared to respond efficiently when these emergencies occur.

The Peru Fire Department is saddened to announce the passing of Roger “Ropey” Ross. Roger began his career with the department on September 6, 1969, and faithfully served the community for 32 years until his retirement on September 8, 2001. During his distinguished career, he attained the rank of Captain.

We are grateful for Roger’s dedication, leadership, and years of service to the department and the community. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of serving alongside him.

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of retired Peru Fire Department member, Larry “Smoke” Hensell. Larry began his career on January 16, 1964, and honorably served for 28.5 years before retiring on July 19, 1992. During his time with the department, he held the rank of Assistant Chief for 15.5 years and served as Chief for 4 years. He also dedicated 30 years as a member of the pension board.

Larry was deeply committed to preserving the history, traditions, and values of the department, ensuring they were passed on to future generations. He took great pride in mentoring new members and encouraging others to leave the department better than they found it. Whether welcoming new equipment, supporting department events, or volunteering his time, Larry was always among the first to arrive and the last to leave.

For 62 years, the fire station was truly his home away from home. Larry’s servant’s heart, dedication, and unwavering commitment to the fire service will never be forgotten. He will be greatly missed, and there will never be another “Smoke.”

It is with deep regret that the Peru Fire Department announces the passing of retired firefighter Lamoine Correll.

Lamoine began his career with the department on May 1, 1965, and honorably served for 30 years before retiring on May 1, 1995. During his distinguished career, he held the rank of Assistant Chief and Lieutenant.

Services will be held on Saturday, February 14, with the Peru Fire Department Honor Guard in attendance to honor his life and service.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Lamoine’s family, friends, and fellow firefighters.

Structure fire contained in Peru Township

Peru, IN - January 27, 2026

In the early morning hours of January 27, 2026, the Peru Fire Department responded to a structure fire at a two-story residence in Peru Township.

Upon arrival, firefighters observed smoke coming from the rear of the home. Crews advanced into the structure and made an aggressive interior attack. Fire was located in a bedroom on the second floor. The fire was quickly brought under control and extinguished.

Fire crews remained on scene to conduct overhaul operations and to check for any extension beyond the room of origin. The fire was declared under control and fully extinguished approximately 20 minutes after the initial response.

The Peru Fire Department would like to thank the Peru Police Department, Denver Fire Department, Mexico Fire Department, Miami County EMA, and Parkview EMS for their assistance on scene.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
