Steamboat Trace Trail Update 🌳🚲

The Steamboat Trace Trail remains closed south of Peru to the Honey Creek Bridge due to significant tree damage from the wildfire in late March. The cleanup is extensive and will require additional resources and equipment. The work has been included in the FY27 budget so additional resources can be brought in to complete the cleanup safely.

We anticipate having this section of the trail reopened by October 1. Updates will be provided as the work progresses.

Barricades remain posted at both ends of the closure. The sections of the trail north of Peru and south of the Honey Creek Bridge remain open.

In the meantime, field staff have been addressing areas along the rest of the trail that need attention.

We know this has been a long closure, and we appreciate everyone’s patience. We’re looking forward to getting this section cleaned up and reopened, too!

We need your help!

The City of Peru is looking for letters of support to send in with our CDBG grant application.

The City of Peru is requesting $53,000 for a Public Planning Grant to update the City’s Comprehensive Plan, which will guide development throughout the City of Peru. The need for this project was identified through the City’s ongoing community improvement efforts: the City’s current Comprehensive Plan dates to 2001 and no longer reflects present conditions or growth needs. The City Council has determined that updating the Comprehensive Plan is necessary to guide the future well-being of the community. This grant will be used to redevelop a comprehensive plan, a key policy document used to guide the goals, expectations, and vision for the development of the community. The comprehensive plan helps align stakeholders, establishes goals and objectives for the Village's growth, and provides the foundation for regulatory tools like zoning, subdivision, and annexation regulations. Additional planning goals include development of a Workforce Housing Plan, and a Substandard and Blight Study. CDBG funded activities will include: $50,000 for Public Planning and $3,000 for General Administration. The CDBG funds will be matched with $10,000 (a 20% match) from the City’s general fund, for a project total of $63,000.

Please have your letter include:

What makes Peru Unique?
Personal stories are welcome that highlight Peru’s unique characteristics.
What would the benefit of an updated comprehensive plan do for Peru?
Include anything relevant that would help Peru stand out.

Note: The City's current comprehensive plan is 25 years old, having an updated comprehensive plan will make us more desirable when applying for future grants.

For questions, please reach out to Peru City Hall at [email protected]
