Año Nuevo State Park’s rich variety of natural and cultural resources draws visitors from around the world. The park’s Natural Preserve offers an extraordinary wilderness experience, where every year up to 10,000 elephant seals return to breed, give birth, and molt their skin amongst the scenic dunes and beaches. The park features the Marine Education Center boasting a natural history exhibit, boo

kstore, and theater. This complex is housed in the historic nineteenth century dairy ranch of the Dickerman/Steele family. These restored buildings recall the early American settlers, while the midden sites throughout the Natural Preserve tell us the story of the Quiroste Indians that lived peacefully here for thousands of years prior to the 1600s. Cove Beach is a short walk from here for beachgoers and surfers. The physical terrain of Año Nuevo is distinctive, with coastal terrace prairie, wetland marshes, dune fields and coastal scrub hosting a high diversity of plants and animals, including the rare and endangered San Francisco Garter Snake and California Red-legged Frog. A hike out along ocean bluffs brings visitors to Año Nuevo Point, a major bird migratory route and fantastic birding location. Located just offshore sits Año Nuevo Island and the remains of a 19th century lighthouse and fog signal station. Built in 1872, the historic keeper’s house now provides a new home to Brandt’s and Pelagic Cormorants as well as California Sea Lions. Otters and harbor seals are often sighted in the waters and magnificent Steller Sea Lions take up residence on the outlaying rocks.

It's not every day you can see deer, pelicans and elephant seals all hanging out on the same beach! Even during the summer months when many elephant seals are at sea foraging and bulking up for the breeding season, there is still a plethora of animal life here at Año Nuevo. You can help preserve the diversity and abundance of this and other parks by coming prepared and following all posted rules and regulations. Thanks for doing your part!

Ever wondered why male elephant seals have such a long proboscis (nose)? So do we! While many scientists devote their time to studying these fascinating creatures, there is still no consensus on what purpose these trunk-like snouts serve. One theory states that this large, noticeable appendage may serve as a visual indicator of maturity and dominance to other males. Another theory is that the nose may adjust the acoustic frequency of the male's call, potentially impacting the distance a call travels. One thing is for sure, it definitely makes it easy to blow bubbles underwater! What purpose do you think the proboscis serves?

Before Año Nuevo became a State Marine Reserve in 2016, it was established as a State Marine Conservation Area in 2007. This designation was part of a large scale push by environmentalists to protect Califronia's priceless coastal regions through the passage of the Marine Life Protection Act in 1999. This piece of legislation re-evaluted and redesigned the network of Marine Protected Areas along California's coast, creating a more cohesive and effective web of conzervation zones to preserve the state's heritage, marine diversity, and economy. It is thanks to these efforts we are lucky enough to enjoy views like this today. Come visit us and see for yourself!

While many brown pelicans along the pacific coast will migrate north and south throughout the year, there are also pods of pelicans that live at Año Nuevo year-round! This is thanks in part to the strict rules of the Marine Protected Area along Año's Coast. The MPA's non-extractive regulations mean local pelicans do not have to compete with fisherman for food, and the rocky cliffs along our shores give them plenty of places to rest and roost. It's thanks to the MPA that our pelicans can thrive here, no matter the season.

What a bee-autiful spot for a nap 😴. While honeybees return to their hives at night to sleep, solitary native bees, like this yellow-faced bumble bee, will often nap in flowers! This behavior protects them from inclement weather, predators, and reinforces the bee's spatial memory of productive foraging sites. Even the busiest bees need a siesta every once in a while!

Good news everyone! Año Nuevo is finally getting a much-needed renovation to its water system. Drinking water will not be available anywhere in the park except for sale at our store. Please plan ahead by filling your water bottles at home BEFORE you arrive at the park. Portable toilets are available for visitors to use at both the parking lot and Staging Area. Thanks for your patience and understanding as we continue to improve the visitor experience here at Año Nuevo!

Ever seen a pelican flying just above the water like this and wondered why they are so close to the surface? They do it for the sake of aerodynamic efficiency. Because of a phenomenon called the "ground effect", flying close to the water creates a cushion of air beneath the pelican's wings, reducing drag and improving lift. This makes it easier for the pelican to glide along, buoyed by the compressed air beneath it. This energy-saving technique is especially helpful over long-distance flights, letting this bird soar in style!
