Code enforcement is near and dear to my heart; in the military, everything we do is governed by regulations and directives. Procedural compliance is the difference between mission success and failure, not to mention, life and death in some cases. In our city, municipal codes help govern the way we conduct ourselves and live our daily lives. These codes affect our safety, quality of life, property value, and many other important aspects.
As the next Mayor of Petal, I will assemble a team of talented, dedicated, and resourceful citizens from all Wards of Petal to conduct a FULL and IN-DEPTH review of all current municipal codes. This will happen during my first six months in office. All codes will be reviewed for accuracy, validity, and enforceability. Using common sense and a reasonable approach, we will propose changes to the Board of Alderman accordingly, to make progress in our City.
Once the review is completed and changes have been made, as seen fit by the Board, we will begin conducting weekly code “training” where we will highlight common municipal codes, details of the code, and the procedures for reporting or submitting complaints. Training topic examples will include answers to some of these common questions we sometimes have: How tall and where can my fence(s) be? How many dogs can I have? What do I do about noise complaints? These training sessions will be archived for easy access and referral on the City's website.
Why do we have codes that cannot be enforced? Why do we have codes that we choose NOT to enforce? When I am Mayor, if the code is on our books, it WILL be enforced. At the same time, I understand life happens – things happen - and I will always be willing to work with our citizens by treating every case separately, looking at the entirety of each situation. I will work with you, but the problems will get resolved.
