Today we recognize and celebrate the retirement of Cathy Dooyes after 11 years of dedicated service to the Petaluma Fire Department.

As our CQI Coordinator, EMS Educator, and champion of the BLS Ambulance Program, Cathy played an instrumental role in helping shape and strengthen many of the programs and systems that support our department today. From CQI and PCR review to education, mentorship, and program development, her impact has been felt across every level of the organization.

Cathy was also a mentor, teammate, and trusted resource to so many within our department, helping coordinate meaningful events such as our survivor’s reunions and always bringing passion and professionalism to the job.

We are incredibly grateful for her years of service, dedication, and commitment to the Petaluma community and our firefighters.

Please join us in congratulating Cathy on her well-earned retirement and wishing her nothing but the best in this next chapter.

Thank you, Cathy — you will be greatly missed.

Today’s rescue mission had a little bit of everything… a curious dog, a frightened rabbit, and a storm drain adventure. 🐶🐇🚒

Earlier today, Petaluma Firefighters responded after a dog chased a rabbit into a storm drain. The pursuit led both animals down into a catch basin below ground level.

Firefighters safely removed both the dog and the rabbit without injury.

Another happy ending thanks to quick action, teamwork, and a little patience.

Yesterday, we had the privilege of celebrating Paramedic Firefighters Jason Engh and Brett Irons at the 2026 Sonoma County Survivors Reunion. This incredible event brings together survivors, their families, first responders, and the broader community to recognize the moments where training, teamwork, and compassion made a life-changing difference.

Each year, only a limited number of incidents are selected for recognition, making this event an especially meaningful reminder of the impact our paramedics and EMTs have every single day.

Jason and Brett exemplify the very best of the fire service. Their professionalism, skill, and commitment to helping others during some of life’s most critical moments reflect the true calling of this profession. Behind every successful outcome is a team of dedicated responders who answer the call without hesitation, bringing high-level emergency care to our community when it matters most.

We are incredibly proud of Jason, Brett, and all of our paramedics and EMTs who continue to serve with compassion, courage, and excellence.

Great job, Jason and Brett — and thank you for making a difference in the lives of others.

Behind every emergency response is training, teamwork, and trust. 🚑🔥

This week we recognize the incredible dedication of our EMS professionals during EMS Week 2026. 🚑🔥

From emergency medical calls and critical patient care to ongoing training and preparedness, our firefighters and paramedics work every day to protect and serve this community when seconds matter most.

EMS is more than emergency response — it’s compassion, teamwork, professionalism, and a commitment to improving outcomes together.

Thank you to all EMS providers who continue to answer the call, day and night.

Today, the Petaluma Fire Department proudly hosted our 4th Annual High School Career Day, welcoming more than 30 local high school students for a hands-on look into the fire service. 🚒

Students rotated through interactive stations focused on:
🔥 Hose operations & PPE
🪓 Forcible entry
🚑 EMS skills
👨‍🚒 Fire service career pathways

Throughout the day, students worked directly with firefighters, medics, and fire prevention personnel to learn what it means to serve the community through public safety.

This event is about more than career exploration — it’s about mentorship, leadership, and investing in the next generation of firefighters and first responders.

A special thank you to Captain Bryan Drees and Administrative Technician Raquel Kilmartin for coordinating this incredible event, along with all PFD personnel and our regional partners from Rancho Adobe Fire and Gold Ridge Fire for helping make the day a success.

We are proud to continue building relationships with local students and inspiring future careers in the fire service.

Today was a special day for the Petaluma Fire Department as we had the honor of hosting a badge pinning ceremony recognizing some outstanding members of our team.

We proudly pinned Engineer Connelly and Assistant Fire Marshal Pham—both representing the professionalism, dedication, and service that define our organization.

We also recognized Firefighter Paramedic Hill, whose journey is a great example of commitment and growth within the fire service. Starting as a part-time single-role EMT and now serving as a career firefighter paramedic, Hill’s path reflects the opportunities that exist through hard work and perseverance.

In addition, today marked a milestone for our department as we recognized our first-ever single-role Emergency Medical Technicians, Morley and Sullivan. This is an important step forward in how we continue to evolve to meet the needs of our community while strengthening our emergency medical services.

We also had the privilege of celebrating Fire Chief Schach for 26 years of service to the City of Petaluma. That kind of commitment is rare and speaks volumes about leadership, resilience, and dedication to public service.

What made the day even more meaningful was having families, children, friends, and coworkers there to share in these moments. The badge pinning tradition is powerful—it reminds us that behind every badge is a support system that sacrifices, supports, and serves right alongside us.

Grateful for days like today that allow us to recognize the people who make this profession so impactful.
