"Indiana’s factory farms are pushing back against a bill that would double their inspections—from just one to two in five years. 🤯 That’s right, they think two inspections in half a decade is too much oversight. Meanwhile, animals suffer in secrecy, and the public is left in the dark. We need more transparency, not less. Yesterday, we had a volunteer appreciation day after months of hard work from our over 400 volunteers that helped with Yes on J. Even though we didn’t get the results we wanted, we had many wins throughout our time working on this ballot campaign. One of these wins being all of the volunteers we had! We celebrated this by playing mini golf at Scandia and having dinner together at Amy’s Drive Thru. We are so glad we’ve built this community and can’t wait to see what we can accomplish next together!

Although Measure J ultimately lost at the ballot box, this campaign was a huge win in so many ways, from generating 100+ news articles about Sonoma County factory farms to bringing out new volunteers who have been inspired and transformed by this experience. We made factory farming the #1 issue in Sonoma County. The awareness, education, and momentum we created is only going to continue. All of us involved learned so much throughout this campaign, and Measure J supporters are already discussing what’s next.

“If local agriculture production is actually based on sustainable small farms, then what is the problem with Measure J? Perhaps the measure is serving to puncture the myth that our counties agriculture production only comes from small sustainable farms?”

There are some very astute observations in these letters to the editor about ✍️✉️

Thank you to the dozens of residents who submitted letters to local newspapers in support of Measure J and the thousands of residents who had in person conversations with our volunteers and/or within their organizations. There are still more letters to come!

“It is my belief that we as humans do owe these animals some respect.”

“Stopping factory farms could help prevent the next pandemic.”

“It’s simply a matter of sustainability, and animal farming fails the test. Like the horse and buggy or faxing, it’s time to move forward.”

Voters across Sonoma County chimed in about the many reasons to during the Measure J campaign. One way they did this was through letters to the editor, which were published in Sonoma County’s largest newspaper, The Press Democrat, as well as in other local outlets. Thank you to everyone who added their voice to this important discussion.

We can’t fit all these incredible letters in one post, so stay tuned to see more of these inspiring letters from the community.

Education and community discussion were key wins of the campaign.

Over 30 people got letters to the editor published in the newspaper sharing their reasons for supporting Measure J, including some residents who had just learned the true extent of factory farming in this county because of the campaign. Some residents called out the Board of Supervisors for interfering with the democratic process by removing critical language from the ballot question that had been drafted by County Counsel and previously approved by the Supervisors. Others addressed the Farm Bureau’s misinformation.

We can’t fit all these incredible letters in one post, so look out for more posts sharing more inspiring letters from the community. Thank you to everyone who submitted letters and everyone who engaged in this important community-wide discussion online or in-person. Let’s keep it going.

Here are 10 of our favorite press pieces from the campaign!

Measure J generated over 130 press hits about Sonoma County factory farms, including in major, national outlets like POLITICO, Vox, Salon, and AP. Local papers and radio covered the campaign in-depth, and leading environmental news organizations discussed the environmental issues with Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) in Sonoma County, including High Country News and The New Lede, which is an initiative of Environmental Working Group.

The exposure and awareness that this campaign generated is incredible. Hundreds of thousands of people in Sonoma County and beyond learned more about the harms caused by industrialized, animal agriculture. This includes journalists who covered CAFOs for the first time and now better understand this important issue that the media often ignores.

We didn’t win at the ballot box this time, but we laid an important foundation of awareness and education that we will build on going forward.
