We have a safety program for everyone, and this month, we’d like to highlight our Safe Space Program! Participating businesses, schools, places of worship, and nonprofit organizations display a Safe Space decal, indicating they are a place where anyone experiencing a hate crime or feeling threatened can seek immediate assistance and contact police.

Each time we share about the program, it becomes one of our most...discussed... topics. We understand not everyone will relate to every safety program we offer, and that’s okay. Just as some community members benefit from our senior safety or business programs, others benefit from Safe Space. Our role is to serve the entire Petaluma community, and we’ll continue doing so with respect, professionalism, and care for everyone. You can learn more about our safety programs at cityofpetaluma.org/police-safety-tips.

Interested in participating? Learn more and request a free decal at cityofpetaluma.org/safe-space.

You can’t park there!

As we wrap up Distracted Driving Awareness Month, this is your reminder to stay alert and focused behind the wheel, otherwise, you could end up in a situation like this.

No text or scroll is worth risking your safety or someone else’s.

Before you drive:
🚫 Put the phone away
🎤 Use hands-free features if needed
👀 Keep your eyes on the road and your attention on driving

This month, Petaluma PD conducted an OTS-funded traffic operation focused on bicycle and pedestrian safety.

During the operation, officers issued 21 citations for various vehicle code violations, issued 1 bicyclist citation, and made 1 DUI arrest. While traffic safety enforcement is part of our everyday efforts, funding from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) allows us to dedicate additional officers specifically to these operations so they can remain focused on traffic safety and education throughout the detail without being pulled away to other calls for service.

We’re committed to improving traffic safety and keeping our roads safe for everyone!

Friendly reminder to everyone enjoying our community parks: it’s on all of us!

Lately, we have received a number of calls about littering, dogs barking, pets being off leash, and other park-related issues.

These spaces are shared by many groups throughout the day, and we ask all visitors to help keep it safe, clean, and enjoyable for everyone.

Please remember to:
🤝Be respectful of other park users and neighbors
🦮Follow posted leash laws and designated off-leash hours; not all parks are off-leash!
💩Pick up after your pets and dispose of waste properly
⚽️Help keep the park clean by picking up trash and sports equipment items
🐶Be aware that the park is open to everyone and sometimes dogs will do dog things, like occasionally bark

We appreciate everyone’s cooperation and understanding as we work together to share these spaces respectfully. Thank you for doing your part to keep our parks welcoming for everyone!

On Sunday, May 24, Petaluma Police officers responded to a theft investigation at 7-Eleven after witnesses reported that an unknown suspect entered the store wearing a mask and stole multiple packs of ci******es before fleeing the scene in a brown Scion with two additional passengers. The witnesses were able to obtain the vehicle’s license plate information and provide it to responding officers.

Shortly after the incident, officers received a FLOCK camera system alert identifying the suspect vehicle within the city. Officers located the vehicle parked in the 300 block of Petaluma Boulevard South with a solo occupant inside. During the investigation, officers observed the stolen ci******es in plain view within the vehicle.

The occupant, Waheed Matero-Lindauer, (19, San Jose) admitted to driving the vehicle during the theft and stated he was aware the theft was going to occur, although he did not enter the store. The suspect was arrested and booked into county jail for 459.5(a) PC – Shoplifting and 182(a)(1) PC – Conspiracy to Commit a Crime.

The identities of the two additional suspects remain under investigation.

The Petaluma Police Department uses FLOCK camera technology as an investigative tool designed to assist officers in identifying suspect vehicles and apprehending individuals involved in criminal activity. The system is not intended for general public surveillance, but rather to provide timely investigative leads that support public safety and help solve crimes efficiently. We are grateful to have these kinds of technology assisting our team and grateful to the quick reporting from witnesses that led to making an arrest.

If you have any information on this incident, please contact the investigating officer, Officer Cox at [email protected] or submit a tip anonymously online by visiting: nixle.us/tip/petaluma-police-department/

-8 drivers for driving under the influence (DUI)
As well as 4 additional arrests for:
-2 drivers for operating vehicles with alcohol in their system while on DUI probation

Memorial Day weekend is one of the busiest travel weekends of the year, and the Petaluma Police Department reminds drivers that impaired driving puts everyone on the road at risk.
