40 Years in Our East side Monarch Spacemaker 🏡

Forty years ago, we moved into our Monarch Spacemaker 2 story home on Berrydale Drive. We were only the second family to live in our home, and many of our neighbors are still the original homeowners.

Looking back, the prices of homes in those days seem so low compared with today. But there was another side to that story — our interest rate was 13½%, and I believe together we were earning about $50,000 a year.

We struggled, we saved, we did a lot of DIY, and we raised a family of five in this home. It wasn't always easy, but this little house became our home, our family's foundation, and the place where so many memories were made.

Over these 40 years, I've experienced many of the different stages of homeownership — from being a first-time homebuyer, to raising a family, to now living on a fixed income. Those experiences have given me a real appreciation for what it takes to maintain a home and how challenging homeownership can be at every stage of life.

And after 40 years, the house is starting to remind me that nothing lasts forever! 😄 But things were built to last!

Recently, a leak was discovered in the gas chamber of our original furnace. After four decades of service, it was time to replace it. I now have a new furnace — a big change from the original one we moved in with 40 years ago.

Next up: a new water heater.

Forty years later, I'm still saving, still maintaining, still learning — and still grateful to call Berrydale Drive home. ❤️🏡
Here's to 40 years of memories, family, neighbors, hard work and homeownership.

Thank you so much to our Petaluma Firefighters (Petaluma Firefighters Local 1415) for endorsing my re-election campaign to the City Council!
As your City Councilmember, public safety and fire prevention/preparedness have been priorities, and together with my Council colleagues, we’ve approved funding to improve public facilities, including our Downtown Station #1 at 2nd and D Streets.
I am a huge proponent of our first responders, and look forward to continuing our collaborative partnership to keep Petalumans safe as your District 3 City Councilmember!

For 50+ years, Petaluma has been my home – I’ve lived, worked, and raised my family here. My parents raised our family on a west Petaluma farm, and my late husband and I raised our three children on the east side of town. Today, my seven grandchildren all attend Petaluma schools.

As a retired preschool teacher, I’m committed to nurturing our children and building a brighter future for today’s residents and our next generation. As a longtime community leader, I’ve served in numerous capacities, including as Vice Mayor and a member of the Petaluma Parks and Recreation Commission, Petaluma Public Safety Advisory Committee, Sonoma County Homeless Coalition, and local nonprofit boards.

On the Petaluma City Council, we’ve doubled investments in parks maintenance, significantly increased funding for road repairs, and continue investing in community improvements. Looking ahead, I’m focused on protecting our local economy and mobile home residents while preserving agriculture, maintaining strong fiscal policies, improving streets and infrastructure, planning responsibly for the fairgrounds’ future, expanding recreational and housing opportunities, and ensuring our Police and Fire Departments have the resources they need.

I’ll continue to be accessible and work hard to represent every member of our community with integrity, experience, and dedication.

District #3 -- I respectfully ask for your vote to continue serving Petaluma. Thank you. ElectKarenNau.com

In District 3- Petaluma Public Art Committee - PPAC choose 5 sculptures of the Mary Fuller McChesney Acquisition for locations in Petaluma.
August 2026, "Shape Totem" was be installed at the Baywood Roundabout at McDowell Boulevard in a partnership with the Public Works Department to provide roundabout improvements. This placement reflects the Petaluma Public Art Committee's desire to have the sculpture be oriented pointing towards Sonoma Mountain, where Mary lived for 40 years.
