Roundabouts 101: Slow Down, Yield, and Go [Español abajo]

Noticed a few more roundabouts while driving around Petaluma lately? They’re designed to help slow traffic, reduce congestion, and improve safety, and Petaluma now has 9 of them around town.

A few tips to navigate them safely:

🚗🧍‍♀️ Slow down as you approach and watch for people in crosswalks.
👀 Yield to traffic already in the roundabout. Look left and enter when it is safe.
🔄 Travel counterclockwise around the center island.
➡️ Signal when you exit so others know where you are going.
🚴 Bicyclists can ride through with traffic or, if a ramp is available, exit the roadway and navigate around the perimeter of the intersection using sidewalks and crosswalks.
🚶‍♂️ Pedestrians should use designated crosswalks and stay out of the center island.

️Remember: slow down, look left, yield, and signal when you exit.

Visit our roundabouts webpage to learn more, find a list of all of Petaluma’s roundabouts, and view an infographic of how to use them. https://cityofpetaluma.org/roundabouts

This spring, 16 Petaluma businesses, including the City of Petaluma, worked with Cool Petaluma, with the support of the County’s Energy & Sustainability team, to earn (or renew) their California Green Business Certification - and the secret to their success was simple: they did it together. 🚸 Teamwork makes the dream work for school safety! 🤝 [Español abajo]

Over the past three years, City staff have been working side-by-side with parents and caregivers, school officials, police, Safe Routes to School partners, and community organizations to take a close look at how students get to and from every public TK-12 school in Petaluma. Then, we worked together to identify practical ways to make those trips safer.

Through Petaluma’s Safe Routes to School Task Force, team members visited schools during busy drop-off and pick-up times, listened to families and school communities, identified safety concerns, and then got to work designing and installing improvements.

Since 2023, that partnership has helped deliver:
🚗 18 school zone speed limit reductions
👀 Visibility improvements at 77 intersections
🚶 81 new or enhanced crosswalks
🚲 3 miles of bikeway and roadway-edge safety improvements

You may have noticed some of these changes near your neighborhood school, including painted curb extensions near crosswalks. These relatively simple improvements help keep parked cars away from crossings, make students easier for drivers to see, shorten crossing distances, and encourage drivers to slow down.

Check out the before and after images of a bulbout and new crosswalk at Maria Drive and Yarberry Drive (Meadow)!

When government, schools, families, law enforcement, and community partners bring their different perspectives to the same table, we can take what we learn from each other and turn it into real improvements on our streets.

Thank you to all the residents and community partners who are helping to make the trip to school safer for Petaluma students! 💛
