All 911, landline, and broadband services remain down at our dispatch center. We have made numerous contacts with AT&T but have yet to receive any update as to what the cause is or when services will be restored

911 calls will continue to be routed to Cass County, who will then relay the information to us via radio.

It is likely that all phone lines at the courthouse are down too, but we have not yet confirmed this.

We will advise any updates as we receive them.

We are currently experiencing a complete 911, landline, and broadband outage. All of which are provided by AT&T. It is our understanding that AT&T cell service is down in Petersburg as well.

We are communicating with AT&T from an off-site location, trying to determine the cause. It appears the issue (unknown), is affecting multiple sites in the area.

All 911 calls are currently routed to Cass County, who will then relay the information to us via radio.

We will post updates as they become available.

This morning, five units from the Menard County Sheriff’s Office conducted a speed enforcement detail on IL 29 from the Mason County Line to the Sangamon County Line.

17 violators were stopped and multiple citations were issued.

This detail was conducted due to complaints of excessive speeding in the area. The intent of the detail was to increase safety in this area and remind motorists of the importance of obeying traffic laws. Future details will be conducted in other areas of the county.

The sheriff’s office asks for all motorists to please obey traffic laws and drive safely.

This morning, the sheriff, chief deputy, and three deputies conducted a speed enforcement detail on IL 97 from New Salem State Park to the Sangamon County line.

14 violators were stopped for speed infractions, and multiple citations were issued.

Per the Menard County Highway Engineer-

The Athens Blacktop is open to all traffic as of today. There will still be crews finishing punch list items off of the roadway at various times this month, but the roadway will remain open.

The decedent in the fatal crash that occurred today at IL Rt. 29 and Hargrave St. has been identified as Karen Fox, 70 years of age, late of Athens, IL. Fox was pronounced deceased at the scene by Menard County Deputy Coroners.

The crash remains under investigation by the Illinois State Police. The Menard County Sheriff’s Office, Athens Police Department, and Athens Fire Department assisted at the scene.

An autopsy has been scheduled. No further information is available at this time.

Per the Menard County Highway Department:

Gudgel Road will be closed to all traffic for 1-mile increments in order to complete chip sealing of the roadway on Wednesday September 11, 2024.

The highway department will begin at the Gudgel Road & Post Street intersection at 8am and work to the west until reaching Price Street.

The portions of the roadway which were completed on September 6th will not be affected. This closure will also include the Sangamon River crossing for a duration as well.

Please use an alternate route to your destination. If you must travel Gudgel Road, please expect delays. Please slow down and exercise caution if you encounter the road crews.

***Arrest made for Residential Burglary***

On June 23, 2024, Menard County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a reported residential burglary in rural eastern Menard County. Deputies arrived on scene and met with the victim, who reported that he had left his home that afternoon/evening and upon returning, discovered that it had been burglarized.

Deputies recovered evidence at the scene, with the assistance of an Illinois State Police Crime Scene Technician. The evidence recovered at the scene, along with evidence obtained via other law enforcement resources, led to the identification of a suspect vehicle and suspect by the responding deputies.

The investigation continued, leading to an arrest warrant being issued on August 8th for Justin R. Burnett, age 38, of Jacksonville, IL. Burnett was taken into custody on August 19th in Springfield, IL by members of the United States Marshals Violent Fugitive Task Force.

Burnett appeared before the 8th Judicial Circuit Court in Menard County, IL on August 22nd. Pre-trial release was denied and Burnett is currently lodged in the Menard County Jail.

Burnett was on probation in Sangamon County for Residential Burglary at the time of this incident, and currently has active arrest warrants in Morgan County for Residential Burglary and Theft.

Sheriff Mark Oller stated “I am proud of my deputies for their great investigative work at the time of this incident and of Chief Deputy Hollis’s follow-up investigation, all of which led to the arrest of this individual. We will not tolerate criminal activity here, and will not allow our citizens to be victimized”.

All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

At 745 AM CDT, a severe thunderstorm was located over Lincoln, moving east at 60 mph.

HAZARD...60 mph wind gusts.

SOURCE...Radar indicated.

IMPACT...Expect damage to roofs, siding, and trees.

This severe storm will be near... Lincoln around 750 AM CDT. Beason around 755 AM CDT.

Other locations impacted by this severe thunderstorm include Broadwell and Lawndale.

This includes the following highways... Interstate 155 between mile markers 0 and 7. Interstate 55 between mile markers 118 and 139.

Due to increased traffic for the Menard County Fair,
traffic on Fairgrounds Road is now one way from Old Fairgrounds Road to the fairgrounds. Traffic will also be blocked at Schirding Avenue and Fairgrounds Road. Traffic not going to the fairgrounds will be detoured down Schirding Avenue towards State Route 97. When the traffic flow lessens, the roadway will be reopened to normal traffic.
