🎉THIS IS NOT A DRILL. THE ATHENS BLACKTOP IS OPEN.🎉

After about six months of closure, the barricades are coming down and the Athens Blacktop is once again open to traffic.

There will still be some minor finishing work, including seeding and grading, so motorists may occasionally encounter flaggers.

We know it’s been a long closure, and we’re happy to finally be the bearers of good news — and retire at least a few detour complaints. 😂

Please drive safely — and try not to overwhelm the roadway all at once just because you’ve missed it.

* Until 200 PM CDT.

* At 124 PM CDT, severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from near Athens to near Springfield to near Auburn, moving east at 50 mph.

HAZARD...60 mph wind gusts.

SOURCE...Radar indicated. At 122 PM, tree branches were broken on the west side of Springfield.

IMPACT...Expect damage to roofs, siding, and trees.

Springfield, Athens, Chatham, Sherman, Rochester, Riverton, Pawnee, Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport, and Illinois State Fairgrounds around 130 PM CDT.

The individual involved in the fatal traffic crash at the intersection of Altig Bridge Avenue and Duncan Avenue on July 31, 2026, has been identified as Chance C. Rutherford, 27, of Greenview, Illinois.

An autopsy was conducted on July 31, 2026. The results are pending.

The crash remains under investigation. No further information is available for release at this time.

July 31, 2026

On July 31, 2026, shortly after 5:00 a.m., the Menard County Sheriff's Office 911 Dispatch Center received a report of a single-vehicle crash near the intersection of Altig Bridge Avenue and Duncan Avenue, in rural Greenview.

A deputy arrived on scene prior to fire and EMS personnel and located a single vehicle involved in the crash with one occupant. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The identity of the decedent is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The crash remains under investigation by the Menard County Sheriff's Office and the Menard County Coroner's Office.

The Sheriff's Office was assisted at the scene by Menard County EMS, the Menard County Rescue Squad, the Greenview Fire Department, and Menard Electric Cooperative.

Sweetwater Ave Closure Update. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the closure for repair will now take place Tuesday, July 14th, at the previously indicated schedule.

🚧 Road closure information 🚧

Per the Menard County Highway Engineer:

Sweetwater Avenue will be closed to through-traffic Monday, July 13th, beginning at 8am from IL Route 29 to Ostermeier Street while road repairs are being completed between Holliday Street and Ostermeier St. The roadway will be reopened to all traffic by the end of the day. Any local traffic utilizing this portion of the roadway to reach their residence or business during the closure, please exercise caution when encountering the construction crews.

Per the Menard County Highway Engineer:

Menard County and all Road Districts will begin chip sealing various roadways throughout the county beginning Tuesday, July 7th, and work through the months of July and August. Please exercise caution when encountering these crews as they complete their work.
