***Arrest made for Residential Burglary***
On June 23, 2024, Menard County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a reported residential burglary in rural eastern Menard County. Deputies arrived on scene and met with the victim, who reported that he had left his home that afternoon/evening and upon returning, discovered that it had been burglarized.
Deputies recovered evidence at the scene, with the assistance of an Illinois State Police Crime Scene Technician. The evidence recovered at the scene, along with evidence obtained via other law enforcement resources, led to the identification of a suspect vehicle and suspect by the responding deputies.
The investigation continued, leading to an arrest warrant being issued on August 8th for Justin R. Burnett, age 38, of Jacksonville, IL. Burnett was taken into custody on August 19th in Springfield, IL by members of the United States Marshals Violent Fugitive Task Force.
Burnett appeared before the 8th Judicial Circuit Court in Menard County, IL on August 22nd. Pre-trial release was denied and Burnett is currently lodged in the Menard County Jail.
Burnett was on probation in Sangamon County for Residential Burglary at the time of this incident, and currently has active arrest warrants in Morgan County for Residential Burglary and Theft.
Sheriff Mark Oller stated “I am proud of my deputies for their great investigative work at the time of this incident and of Chief Deputy Hollis’s follow-up investigation, all of which led to the arrest of this individual. We will not tolerate criminal activity here, and will not allow our citizens to be victimized”.
All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
