PETE 100 Series: As we celebrate a century as a park, we’re revisiting the events that shaped Petersburg National Battlefield, one decade at a time.

The 2020s: New lands

Today we celebrate 100 years as a park, first established on July 3, 1926. It’s fitting that tomorrow we also mark 250 years since the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. We’re excited for the next century of stewardship and public service.

In 2016, Congress authorized Petersburg National Battlefield to acquire additional lands connected to the Siege of Petersburg. While the law granted the authority, the acquisition process takes time. Areas included in the potential expansion represent key battlefields: White Oak Road, Hatcher’s Run, Ream’s Station, Weldon Railroad, and the Breakthrough.

Throughout the 2020s, the park continues working with partners, including the American Battlefield Trust, Conservation Trust, the American Battlefield Protection Program, and local groups like the Petersburg Battlefield Foundation, to make this vision a reality.

Many thanks to a Virginia masonry crew (Nick White and his intern Laurie) from Preservation Virginia, who recently spent days at Petersburg's Historic Farmers Bank Building working on a few areas of failing brickwork in the front of the building. The bank, built in 1817, is one of the oldest bank buildings in the country and is open for tours Fridays and Saturdays.
