Yesterday, our community gathered to honor a truly extraordinary man, Chief Bill Birkle.

It is rare to see a lifetime of service captured in one room, but Chief Birkle’s 60+ year legacy with the Petersburg Fire Protection District is nothing short of legendary. Since joining at the age of 16, Bill has been the steady heartbeat of our department.

The Legacy of Chief Birkle:

50 Years as our Fire Chief (1975–2025).

14 Years serving simultaneously as Fire Chief of the Belleview/McVille Fire Protection District.

40 Years as a State Fire Instructor, mentoring and training over a thousand firefighters across the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

4 Years of honorable service in the U.S. Navy (BT2).

Beyond the titles and the thousands of lives he’s impacted through training and rescue, Bill has been a mentor and a pillar of the Petersburg community.

We want to extend a massive thank you to everyone who joined us to show Bill the appreciation he so greatly deserves.

A special thank you to our guest speakers for their moving tributes/stories:

Marshall Hill
Adam Casteel
Dan Hitzfield
Boone County Judge Executive Gary Moore

A sincere thank you to the organizations that presented Chief Birkle with gifts of appreciation:

Boone County Judge Executive Gary Moore
Petersburg Christian Church
Boone County Fire Chiefs Association
Petersburg Fire District Board
Petersburg Community Action Group
Petersburg Fire Department Boosters

Chief, your boots will be hard to fill, but your lessons will live on in every firefighter who had the honor of learning from you. We are so proud to have you continuing to influence the department as our Battalion Chief.

Please join us in the comments by sharing your favorite memory of Chief Birkle or a simple "Thank You" for his 60 years of service! 👇

Congratulations to Brian Hall, who was officially sworn in as the new Chief of the Petersburg Fire Dept. during last night’s board meeting. Chief Hall has served on the department for 15 years, and is a life long resident of Petersburg. We are incredibly lucky to have him and we look forward to the great things to come under his leadership!

Chief Bill Birkle officially retired as Chief of the department after 50 years last night, however, he will continue to serve on the department, and was sworn in as a new member of the Fire District Board, replacing Chief Hall. The amount of gratitude our community owes Chief Birkle could never be put into words. He has saved countless homes, lives, and animals, responding to calls even during the night, holidays, and bad weather, on top of pouring thousands of hours into training- all as an unpaid volunteer. We will be celebrating all of Chief Birkle’s accomplishments as well as his unwavering dedication to the department in February, with details still to come.

We would also like to give a special “Thank You” to Judge Moore who took the time to come swear in our Chiefs to their new roles.

We hope everyone has a wonderful and safe Thanksgiving without needing to invite the fire department to family dinner.

🔥 Did you know that October is Fire Prevention Month? 🔥
The goal is to raise fire safety awareness and help protect homes and families.

This is a great time to take a few extra steps to keep your family safe:
-Test your smoke alarms
-Go over your escape plan
-Never leave hot stoves or ovens unattended
- Keep space heaters 3 feet away from anything that can burn

A few minutes of prevention can stop disaster.
