ABOUT ROTARY INTERNATIONAL SERVICE CLUBS
Recently there have been many articles in the Observer and Menard County Review concerning the Rotary Club of Menard County. Perhaps one may wonder what is Rotary, and what is its purpose?
RotaryInternational, the world’s first service club organization, is a worldwide organization of more than 1.2 million business, professional, and community leaders. Members of Rotary clubs, known as Rotarians, provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. The Rotary motto: Service Above Self.
Rotary began with the vision of one man — Paul Harris. The Chicago attorney formed the Rotary Club of Chicago on 23 February 1905 so professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas and form meaningful, lifelong friendships. First chartered in 1925 as Petersburg Rotary Club, the name was later changed to Rotary Club of Menard County.
Over time, Rotary’s reach and vision gradually extended to humanitarian service. Members have a long track record of addressing challenges in their communities and around the world. In addition to the Octogenarian Dinner, other projects Rotary Club of Menard County has been involved with are: Rotary Park, Harvest Fest, Citrus sales, contributing to various community projects, and the Literacy Grants given to local schools and libraries. Literacy grants are funded by the Rotary Family Day at the Ball Park Cub/ Cardinal Ball Game.
The Object of Rotary is exemplified in its guiding principles known as the Four-Way Test. This pledge is a nonpartisan and nonsectarian ethical guide for Rotarians to use for their personal and professional relationships. Rotarians recite it at club meetings:
Of the things we thing, say or do,
First, Is it the TRUTH?
Second, Is it FAIR to all concerned?
Third, Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS, Fourth, Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
In addition to the principles of the Four-Way Test, Rotary has seven areas of focus. Perhaps most well known and recognized is Rotary’s work to eradicate polio world-wide. Disease prevention and treatment is one of the seven areas of focus. The other six are Maternal and Child Health, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, Peace building and conflict resolution, Community Economic Development, Basic education and Literacy, and Environment.
Rotary Club of Menard County is part of Rotary District 6460 clubs serving west central Illinois. Rotary Club of Menard County meets on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month at 6 pm at Riverbank Lodge. Sometimes the Club meets at Rotary Park, or a local restaurant. If you are interested in attending a meeting, please leave a message at 217-341-5814, 815-742-5134, or go to Rotary Club of Menard County on Facebook.

WindSolarUSA, INC Presentation at Menard County Rotary Meeting
Michelle Knox, founder and owner of WindSolarUSA,Inc, spoke at the October 9th Rotary Club of Menard County bi-weekly meeting which was held at Riverbank Lodge.
She addressed the question many people ask: Why go Solar?
1) Solar increases the value of your home. A solar electric system can increase the value by $20,000 for every $1,000 in reduced annual operating cost.
2) Solar makes good financial sense! With incentives offered, a system will generally pay for itself within 5-7 yrs, and can continue to provide you with lower electric bills for 25-40 yrs!
3) Solar comes with big financial incentives! WindSolarUSA can research and explain what savings are available to make your system affordable.
4) Solar gives you protection against electricity rate hikes. Solar installation is a fixed cost, savings increase as rates rise.
5) No changes to how you use electricity. You turn on lights, plug in lamps, leave appliances, pumps, furnaces, etc plugged in, and however else you use electricity.
6) Solar power is highly reliable. Most modules have a 25-30 yr. limited warranty, and are photovoltaic meaning they are sensitive to light, so even on cloudy, rainy days you can generate some electricity!
7) Little maintenance is required. An occasional rinse off with a hose can help to clear debris and dust, if there is any accumulation.
😎 Going solar is easy! A group of solar modules is called an array which can be installed on your roof or in your yard. Many farms and residential homes use ground mount arrays.
Michelle also pointed out that Illinois is a leader in supporting solar energy in the country! She also gave credit to Menard Electric Cooperative for being one of the top cooperatives with support for solar energy installations. Prairie Rivers Network recently put out their Illinois Rural Electric Cooperative Scorecard. “This initiative researched and scored every co-op in Illinois on a wide range of practices including transition to renewable energy, member-owner programs, transparency, and governance.” Menard Electric Cooperative scored third out of 26 cooperatives in the state!
Rotary Club of Menard County extends an enormous thank you to Michelle Knox of WindSolarUSA, Inc. for her continued advocacy and vast knowledge of solar energy information and initiatives. ROTARY CLUB OF MENARD COUNTY DONATES TO GIRLS ON THE RUN
Rotary Club of Menard County was pleased to host Samantha Weaver of the Porta Central chapter of Girls on the Run for a presentation at our September 11th meeting held at Riverbank Lodge.
During the Community Night at Broadgauge, Rotary President Linda Connelly met a representative of the Girls on the Run program, and invited them to speak to club members. The Porta Central chapter program reaches out to girls in 3rd through 6th grades, and focuses on empowering them through both character development and endurance training. Beginning in September, the program ends in November with a 5K run event. During training sessions which meet after school, participants are provided with healthy snacking options. These nutritious snacks will ensure that girls have the clean, sustainable energy they need to train effectively for their upcoming 5K event. This year’s program has about 20 participants.
After an engaging and informative presentation, Rotary Club of Menard County members voted to support this program by making a donation toward providing snacks for this season’s program. This donation will help Girls on the Run to maintain a program that not only enhances their physical fitness, but also fosters a positive and supportive community environment.
Rotary Club of Menard County meets on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month. If you are interested in attending a meeting, please call and leave a message at 217-341-5814 or 815-742-5134.

ROTARY CLUB OF MENARD COUNTY UNUSUAL HARVEST FEST
As most everyone in Petersburg knows, Harvest Fest was rather memorable this year!!! Rotary Club of Menard County was no exception. Having our usual corner spot for our booth, serving Jones Boy’s Market pulled pork sandwiches, three meat hot dogs, and water, things were beginning to wind down. Someone suggested it looked like rain was moving in, and we should start packing up. Well, the rain moved in faster than anticipated and the wind picked up, also picking up our tent, dropping a couple of clanging metal poles before settling back down. Several people sought shelter under the Rotary tent, and we all held onto the poles for dear life to keep the tent from blowing across into other concessions, and also across the court house yard. Maybe not the smartest move in hindsight! Fortunately, after what seemed like an eternity, the storm let up. No one was hurt, only drenched and a bit shaken. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HELPED HOLD OUR TENT IN PLACE-ROTARIANS AND NON-ROTARIANS!!
Even though it was an eventful fundraiser, Rotary Club of Menard County wishes to again thank the community of Petersburg and surrounding areas. Funds raised through Harvest Fest, the citrus fruit sale, and the generosity of many local businesses are used to sponsor our annual Octogenarian Dinner, as well as other community projects.
Rotary meets on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of every month. For more information go to: Rotary Club of Menard County on Facebook or text/call 217-341-5814 or 815-742-5134.
