Pillars of Health

Pillars of Health Building a community where all children and their families have access to wellness information and the tools to apply it in their lives.

We envision a community where all children reach for their dreams, unencumbered by health and intellectual challenges too often faced by those who grow up with limited financial resources. We welcome opportunities to lock arms with families who are committed to their children’s success, and other members of the community who share resources that help children soar. We serve children and families i

n Petersburg and Hopewell, Virginia as well as the surrounding areas. Of the 133 cities and counties ranked in Virginia, Petersburg was ranked at 133 and Hopewell at 128 (University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute, 2014). These poor rankings were in response to a variety of health outcomes, behaviors, and socioeconomic factors. From low high school graduation rates and household income to extremely high obesity and diabetes rates, frightening patterns have emerged in this area that impact the future of children and their families. While many of the children in these communities do not know where their next meal is coming from, others only have a convenience store full of snack foods to shop at. As stewards of these communities and the future, our goal is to be a reliable and trusted source of education and opportunity for the children and families here.

Jonathan and Dara, VSU students who just started J&D Creative Expressions and Consult, created our "Bucky" image for our Chew On This Oral Health Engagement Project campaign. It was sponsored by the Petersburg Wellness Consortium. During Petersburg's 6/2/17 H.O.P.E. Fest, part of the Beyond ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences) Summit, kids got copies of the Bucky cartoon handout. One child was inspired to draw his own version of Bucky, which J&D framed to hang in their home. Priceless!

Have fun with your kids, while showing them that it's important for everyone to "like to move it, move it" this Saturday at the Petersburg YMCA's Healthy Kids Day, 1am-1pm. 120 N. Madison Street. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/01/170109102435.htm

Young children do follow in their parents' footsteps. Literally. That's the conclusion of researchers who found that in underserved populations, parents' physical activity -- and their sedentary behavior -- directly correlates with the activity level of their preschoolers. Researchers say these find...
