🌊 WHITE RIVER LEVEL UPDATE – PETERSBURG 🌊
The White River at Petersburg is currently forecast to crest near 21.1 feet on Sunday, August 23, 2026.
With additional rainfall expected across our area and locations upstream, river levels and the projected crest may change. Residents who live along the White River or in flood-prone areas should remain alert and continue monitoring conditions.

Update(8/6): National Water Model derived flood maps in Alaska have been restored. Remaining flood map in Alaska is pending resolution.Flood Inundation Mapping services are now available for 60% of the U.S. population here. Additional NWPS resources are available here.

Incoming storms this morning will be capable of excessively high rainfall rates that may induce localized flooding. Additional storms that develop later today into tonight may do likewise. This is most likely to occur if and where storms may repeat their heavy rains over the same areas.

Scattered thunderstorms may develop over southeast Missouri in the late afternoon and move east southeast across the Quad State through the evening. A few severe storms will be possible.

The main weather story is our next severe storm chances. A complex of storms develops upstream to our northwest, and by late tonight, will push its lead edge of storms toward our doorstep; damaging winds will be the primary severe hazard. The boundary lays out and lingers thru the day Wednesday, when by late afternoon into the evening, the next chance of storms hits.

[12:55 PM Sunday, August 16th] The severe weather risk for this afternoon and evening has increased for areas along the Interstate 64 corridor from southwest IL into northern parts of southeast MO. The risk remains the same for everywhere else. Damaging wind gusts will be the main threat. A few storms could develop as early as 3-5 PM, but the main timeframe for severe storms will be between 8 PM and 1 AM.

[3 PM CDT Friday, Aug. 14] An NWS damage survey team confirmed that an EF-1 tornado struck Winslow in Pike County, Indiana, on the afternoon of Wednesday, Aug. 12th. Peak winds were around 110 mph. While a Severe Thunderstorm Warning was in effect at the time of the tornado, we want to acknowledge that there was no Tornado Warning in effect at the time of the tornado. We take a lot of pride in our work and take our mission to protect life and property very seriously. We're actively reviewing our warning operations from this event, so we can improve and meet your expectations (and our own!) going forward.

American Red Cross is set up at the Winslow Fire Station with tarps, gloves, and contractor bags. They will be there till 3pm.
