Peterson, MN

Peterson, MN Small town tourism at its finest. Peterson is situated along the Root River and the Root River State Trail.

Peterson is tucked against steep wooded bluffs, a picturesque place to live and play in Southeastern Minnesota along the Root River and Root River State Trail. Nestled in the bluffs of Southeastern Minnesota in the heart of the Rushford Peterson Valley, just across the bridge from National Scenic Byway 16, you will find the city of Peterson. Peter Peterson Haslerud, the town father, must have sett

led here because of the Root River, fertile soil, breathtaking scenery, bountiful wildlife, great fishing, abundant trout streams, and few if any mosquitoes! Our city of 1/2 square mile boasts an RV campground with a new children's playground, a historic inn, a lovely B&B, hotel suites, a restaurant famous for homemade pies and their breakfast and lunch specialties, an old-fashioned ice cream shop, canoe, inter-tube and kayak rental, American Legion open to the public, an artist making unique gift items from exotic woods and acrylics, plus more! Many groups use our variety of accommodations to host reunions and retreats. Use Peterson as your home base when visiting the area and canoe the Root River, bike and hike the Root River Trail, scout out the common birds (350) of our valley, visit the Peterson State Fish Hatchery, and don’t forget to tour The Peterson Station Museum. Drive the Scenic Byway and watch eagles soar over the river, shop Historic Bluff Country to find a wide variety of treasures, discover nearby caves, and take an Amish Tour. Friends of Peterson is our nonprofit volunteer group supporting and promoting Peterson community events for area residents and visitors. We always welcome more volunteers to plan, organize and help with our events. Planning meetings are held monthly on the fourth Thursday at 7:00 PM. Contact: [email protected]

Just a reminder that Niagara Cave is now open 7 days a week! During these remaining days of the academic year, many school groups are fitting in last minute field trips. This means that some tour times are blocked off on our online calendar reservation system, so we recommend checking availability online beforehand. (Cave visitors will NOT be scheduled on the same tour as our student groups, but there may be additional enthusiastic kiddos around these next few days before summer break.) Happy summer break!

The Sami People — Guardians of the Arctic North 🇸🇪

In the frozen beauty of northern Scandinavia lives one of Europe’s oldest Indigenous cultures — the Sami people. Wrapped in vibrant traditional clothing and surrounded by snow-covered forests, their connection to nature is not just tradition… it’s a way of life.

For centuries, the Sami have lived across the northern regions of Sweden, Norway, Finland, and parts of Russia — an area known as Sápmi. Reindeer herding is at the heart of their culture. These magnificent animals are not only a source of livelihood, but also deeply woven into Sami identity, storytelling, clothing, food, and survival in the harsh Arctic clima

The colorful garments you see — called gákti — are more than beautiful winter outfits. Every color, pattern, and detail represents family roots, region, and heritage. The red, blue, yellow, and green fabrics stand out brilliantly against the white Arctic snow, symbolizing resilience and pride in a land where winters are long and unforgiving.

Despite modern changes, the Sami continue to preserve their language, music (like the traditional joik singing style), handicrafts, and ancient knowledge of the land. Their lifestyle reflects balance — taking only what nature provides and respecting the environment that sustains them. 🌲❄️

Today, the Sami people remain a vital part of Nordic culture, reminding the world that progress and tradition can coexist. Their story is one of endurance, identity, and harmony with the Arctic wilderness.
In the quiet of the snow, under the northern sky, their heritage lives on — strong, proud, and deeply connected to the land. 💙
