Pancake ice, like frozen lily pads, rises and falls with the Great Lakes’ motion. They crowd the steely Petoskey breakwall beneath the lighthouse’s red bow.

Hey Breakwall walkers—did you know that exactly 101 years ago this month, in December 1924, a massive Lake Michigan storm ripped the original lighthouse right off our breakwall? That beautiful light was gone in one night, just days after being shut down for winter. It reminds us how fierce our lake can be. These December days, with the spray freezing into those wild ice shapes, it’s a sight to behold… from a safe distance! ❄️🌊⚓

This Monday, the Great Lakes are putting on a spectacular show with monster waves expected across all five lakes!

According to the latest National Weather Service marine forecast, wave heights could top 20+ feet on multiple lakes, including impressive swells rolling into our beautiful Little Traverse Bay.

Nature lovers and adventure seekers – this is your chance to witness the dramatic beauty of crashing waves against the iconic Petoskey Breakwall. The thunderous roar, the misty spray, and the sheer force of the lake make for an unforgettable (and free!) natural spectacle that’s perfect for photos.

Just remember: Safety first! These powerful waves demand respect. Please stay back, keep a safe distance on shore, and avoid the breakwall itself during high-wave conditions.

Bundle up, grab your camera, and head to Petoskey for a front-row seat to one of winter’s most awe-inspiring displays on the Great Lakes.
